I drove two 355's and a 348 on Saturday in Southern California. The 355's sound amazing when the exhaust opens up. The 348 not as much. One 355 had a tubi exhaust and the other one was stock I believe but it still howled about the same. Can a 348 be made to sound like a 355?

I'm not sure, engines are a bit different. 348 has 300hp at 7200rpm and 355 is a 5 valves and rev up to 8250 rpm for 375hp. That 1000rpm more is the main difference in the singing of the 355.

Not really, the 355 has 5 valves per cylinder and 1000rpm higher redline compared to the 348 so while you can probably get close it won't be the same. The other feature is the valved exhaust which the 348 doesn't have, so even if you get the 348 to sound similar to the 355 at high rev WOT, it will probably be loud and boomy at lower rpms and throttle making it not have the stark difference between low rpm/throttle and high rpm/throttle dual nature of the 355.

Yes that's the one. Not sure what exhaust is on there but it's aftermarket. In my neighborhood, stock is just fine with all the wail you need to know it's a Ferrari. But yeah Tubi or Capristo would be nice.

I've read here over the years about 348 owners/interested parties wanting the car to sound like a 355, or even replicate the F1 shriek as well. I suppose one could get to close to it but, to me, they're two different cars.

For opinions, while my Mondial sounds nothing like a 355, it's exhaust tone is much more pleasing than my 348 (both with stock exhaust), especially the rumble at idle. :)

The 355's rev limit is @ 8750 RPM ........ with the bypass valve exhaust ..... are two reasons why the 355 sounds so freaking awesome ... :)

Go to youtube , search " 348 hyperflow tubi. " and you can hear how awesome a 348 can sound . Have hyperflows and a nouvalari on mine , nice rumble down low and the high rpm scream you want . So yes a 348 can sound amazing, you just need to spend a few bucks

Its the quality of the Video but the 348 sounded better. And no am not being bias, really trying hard to like the 355 sound better (I have on occasion) but not this time.

A lot of the F355 sound comes from the "Individual Throttle Bodies" rather than the "throttle Plate per side" used on 348, 360, 430, 458....

Secondarily, a bit of sound comes out through the plastic air boxes.

And then there is the 8500RPM RedLine and 8750RPM fuel cut off.

And then there is the Throttled Y-pipe exhaust, bypassing 2/3rds of the exhaust (stock: probably a bit less in Tubi form) when open.

Can a 348 be made to sound like a 355? Yes, but it would break most banks accounts to be able to do so. Michelotti made LeMans engines in 348 format that sound remarkedly like F355 engines (once you lose 10dBa of sound pressure level.) These things had the Individual Throttle Bodies and 9500 RPM RedLines (and 40 hour service lives.....)
So, it can be done, but its nadda gonna be cheap.

    Yes it can be done.
    1.) buy a Kreissieg F1 valvetronic exhaust $$$$
2.) remove the cats and add test pipes $
3.) change the ECU chips to raise the RPM to 8500 $$

    Here is the result

348 sound almost the same with a capristo stage 2 or 3 and high flow cats, or test pipes. In some respects it sounds better.

Vvassallo's 348 with an early model Gothspeed exhaust is the best sounding 348 I have ever heard.

Tried a tubi and was disappointed, went to a Quicksilver and that was no better, went with a Capristo Stage 3 and now the world seems perfect… But I must say that the Kreisseig does sound amazing too if not has a slight edge on mine.

Hi Tom, I'm the guy that bought the Tubi test pipes from you back in 04. One of the best things I've done to the car
    Thanks

Nice try, but that is lower and more guttural rather than a high pitched shriek.

I've heard 348s that can come close to a 355. There's a second harmonic generated by the F355 engine that we associate with the F1 shriek (actual F1 engines run twice as fast to generate the same pitch so it's not really the same thing).

With a clever exhaust some 348s have acquired the 2nd harmonic shriek, but of course you still have the lower redline that can't match the 355.
