Most of our 458's run out of the 7 year maintenance soon ... we can do a lot of work ourselves.

Not only a filter change, battery change, oil change but also brake pads exchange and much more ...

Post your views about that here, your DIY jobs and all tip please ! With lots of photo's :)

    TOW HOOK problems:

When getting ready for a recent track day, I found that the tow bar that came with my car simply would not thread into the socket inside the front grill area.

Read all about preparation to install your TOW HOOK here.

Excellent suggestion, Mel. As the 458’s age, and DIY folks get over the mystique of working on a Ferrari, I’m sure there will be many more write ups. These cars are mostly off warranty and coming off maintenance too.

As a former Porsche owner, there was a website dedicated to troubleshooting and fixing all kinds of Porsches. Was heartening to see the depth of brainpower of owners. Would be great to see here.

I love to do my own work on my cars. Looking forward to this thread.
Some pics of the brake fluid change that I did in the fall:

One piece of advice I can give after doing this job is to make sure that you use a torque wrench on the bleeder screws. They are a little tighter than you would think ~17-20 nm (Approx 13 - 14 ftlbs)
After you are done, mash on the pedal a few times and check for leaks before putting wheels back on.

Did YOU see this message in your left screen already ?

What did you do: did you go to the oem Ferrari dealer or started DIY maintenance ?

I didn’t get that screen yet (I bought car last April/May and put 2,000 miles on it). I did an included service
So I don’t know if the dealer reset it.
From now on, I’m doing my own services so I have to either pay the dealer to clear the light, or I have to buy a tool that does it. I found a tool that was advertised to clear the light, and I emailed the seller to make sure. Thankfully I checked because they said that the oil reset function doesn’t work on that tool yet. Hopefully it will work in the near future since I can’t find one that definitely works.

WHY would you attempt to exchange your transmission fluids ?

Do you mean gearbox (gb) ?

In any vehicle with ZF gb the oil is there for life ; that's to say 100K kms imo … so WHY ?

My 2012 has just had his last free service + airbag recall Ferrari 458 #60 of 5hrs extra (but free) work.

Bur my sparkplugs still have never been exchanged at the 47000 kms …...

Who did renew then ? Which sparkplugs ?

    Was it simple ?

Please help us, many will benefit from YOUR write-up :)

My thought on transmission oil is, and just my opinion:
I am doing the gearbox fluid every 5 years, and the DCT fluid at approx. 25 - 30,000 miles.
I'm a believer that no fluid is "life time". Like I said, just my opinion, no scientific data. All my cars are showroom condition for the whole time that I own them, so I must be making good decisions

Actually it is a tube made from aluminum, it had an crack on it dealer told me they had an couple of 458’s with the same issue. I was lucky and saw it while changing the exhaust.

It’s kind a hard process cause you need special huge syringe kind of think. You put the hose in side of the gearbox and inject oil in it, i have very close connection with my dealer so they lend me theirs. I don’t remember which plug was for the fill and also is very hard to find because all look similar but i will try to find a picture for you.

If you get the huge syringe and find the feed plug engine must be on in the process and you have to fill it till it’s overflow, it takes 4 to 5 liters of oil.

If you have the proper tool it’s easy but messy process and according to my delivery this tool was specific for DCT Ferrari’s, i couldn’t find it anywhere else.

Just use a pump with a hose to transfer new oil into the gearbox. Add until it overflows. I don't think the engine needs to be on during the fill.

Ok, folks so I'm reading over the "Warranty and Service Book - U. S. Version" for 2011 458 Italia. The scheduled maintenance schedule indicates the fuel injectors and catalytic converters are to be changed at 8 years or 100,000 miles. My car has ~23,000 miles on it but 8 years is now. Does anyone have an opinion on replacing these items at this time based on years?

We did the gearbox and differential fluids on my 458 challenge, which is an identical procedure to the Italia. The gearbox fluid fills from a port on the bottom and required a few tricks, we ended up using a garden sprayer with a small piece of brake line pipe bent on the end to inject the fluid up and into the port. It’s doable but can get messy.

Tip: measure what drains out and pu only that amount in. We use the same trick for ochanges and I prevents overfill, high is actually way to o and makes a mess f he intake air filter.

Sure when you’d need to do the gearbox and diff on a street car, but for a race car we do it at start is season

Need a diy thread and part number tread to cross reference parts to non ferrari stuff. Lambo talk had a similar thread. I personally work on my stuff and don’t mind tearing stuff apart so would be nice to see

I spoke to a Ferrari service manager on this one and he confirmed to change these items as needed. He had no comment on why the scheduled maintenance schedule says to change them based on years or mileage.
