After my CV boot went poof for the second time in 1 year. It was time to add a bit more shielding to protect those precious boots from again another premature failure.

Material: HeatShield Inferno Shield 6"x14" stainless steel with ceramic core.
    Cost: $51.00 each (Amazon.com item 120614)

    Specs:
    - Continuous operating temp of 1800 deg F
    - Capable of reflecting 90% of radiant heat (per manaufacturer)
    - Flexible and holds shape.

Install was a bit tough given one side of the factory heat shield was touching the exhaust and I wanted to avoid dismanteling. I drilled a mounting hole in the Inferno Mat to hold it with the innermost bolt. The other bolt was pretty tight between the heat shield and the exhaust. I bent the material to cover as much area without touching anything else that would cause an annoying vibration.

Post install, no annoying vibration noise and it appeared successful. Lets see how long those pesky CV boots will last now.

The sheet was 6"x14" and I used 1 sheet for each side. The sheet cannot be cut since it has loose ceramic material sandwiched inside.

Ordered two and will add it as a near zero weight addition for safety measure.

I see that they also make a sticky shield and could be applied on to the original shields. I just replaced all 4 cv boots and don't want to do that again any time soon. Updats us on how its working.

I am not clear on what the OP did with the material. DId he just stick it in there and attach it with one nut using one of the nuts holding the OEM shield on?

DId he leave the little OEM shields on?

My boots are OK right now. One was replaced when they did the headers but Im in there with the Cats now and if this is a god idea , Id like to try it.

Congrats on doing the boots Peter. It looks like a PIA job to do. I'm sure the learning curve makes it harder as well.

First side took about 8 - 10 hours. The other side took maybe 3. Could have been faster if I were to push it. The best resource was a youtube video on how to change on a 348. Almost identical except for the size of the flange bolts (13mm on the 355 vs hex bolts on the 348). Impact wrench is a must for the hub nut removal. I picked up a decent one at HF for about %69 on sale (don't get their cheaper ones). I'll do it again if I have to. Other than the tools, total cost was $160 for two complete boot kits (all 4 boots). Only my two inner boots were bad but I changed them all since I was there.

Heat shields have been working great. Haven't had a CV joint boot failure yet. I went through 1 left and 2 right in a 1.5 years prior to install. It has been over a year now without CV boot failure.

I drilled holes in the heat shields to match where the bolts for the factory heat shield go. I still have the factory heat shield in place... this just fits over the factory one and then bolted down. The material can be bent to shape to cover what you need to protect.

That's good to know. I'm not nuts about how it looks but maybe protection trumps appearance and it's pretty easily reversed as well.

The one that 355rockit used looks to be larger that the original shield and would offer extra protection. The same manufacture also makes a stick on type of shield that could be cut and stuck on the original shields to look closer to the original look but with better performance. I may go that route but being the same size, it wouldn't give the extra shielding has he has done here.

It does look better in person and doesn't stand out.

You posted the Inconel version, which costs almost twice as much.

I'm glad you found this out. I was about to post. I put these on my CV boot heat shields a while ago. I trimmed them to fit, sealed edges, and painted flat black (see below).

In addition, they can be painted with, e.g., VHT high temp flat black paint. Thus far, no flaking.

I bought the adhesive heat shield material but am waiting until after the Pasadena Concorso to install as I am sure they would ding me a point for improving the heat shielding.

Another project to think about... I just had my CV boots done since their need of replacement came up during the ppi..figured I'd have that out of the way for years- but after hearing about their location maybe not :( It looks like another design quirk of the 355. I'll ask my mechanic what he thinks of this- it seems to make sense to me to do this!

My cv boots look fine after 3 years. I wonder why others failed so often. How many miles a year do you drive?
