Today I drove down to the southern part of Belgium and found this prior unknown Mondial T with VIN 91280. Docs showed that it was first sold by Francorchamps Motors in September 1994. The current (second) owner had a frontal accident with it in 2015 and since then, never drove it again. Damage is repairable and as it only seems to have 32,000 km (!!!), it seems to be a very interesting rebuild candidate. Engine doesn't start, caused by faulty fuel pumps probably, interior looks good, cabrio roof is OK, car is complete. Chassis and body are free of rust. Was never registered by the second owner and does not appear in the VIN database either.

Question for the VIN experts: does the VIN more or less correspond to the moment of first registration?

I'm taking a decision on the car this weekend: donor car or rebuild project ... both are possible

91900 was a manufactured or registered as a 1992 model, I can tell you that. Let me comb through some past Ferrari Market Letter issues.

What's the story of the nice Fiat Dino Coupe in the background? That car really needs to be saved... ;)

Looks like it has been stored in a wet outdoor area for along time, the restoration to a reliable standard would be extensive. Seems a stretch to get this one back in action. Some nice usable parts that would clean up well, so looks like a great example for spares. But of course, any car can be restored when there is sufficient dedication.

I am not a VIN expert, very much an amateur, but 91278 and 91282 were both 1992 cars.

The VIN is created when a vehicle is ordered so it can be built to the specs of the buyer and later be itentified and eventually registered. When the first registration occurs has no connection to the VIN. A car may theoretically never be registered but it will still have a VIN.
