Mr Massini, I just had my car shipped in from California last week. It has a strange history. Can you assist me with the history?
My chassis number is 01668 0009674 Gearbox number 865e Body number 858 Originally assigned chassis number03866, but the changed to 01668 which was the chassis number of the first dino this italian bought, then crashed. It was an m serie . He then had another dino ordered. But asked for his old chassis number to be assigned to save taxes. Is this right? Thx Tim
So what exactly ist the question? You know most of it already. It appears that the later (second) car now uses the identity of the first one. This for sure was NOT done by the factory. Must have been done privately by one of the owners and/or his dealer. Your car really is 03886 but unfortunately using the identity of the earlier 01668. It is possible that 01668 was crashed. Pretty sure that the seller in SoCal (Mr. N.) told you all that prior to your purchase. I'd never buy a car with such a history. I recommend to send this car to Maranello and to have it properly re-identified with the correct number 03866. My 0.2 cents. Marcel Massini
Mr Massini, Thank you for your reply. I was told by dealer the car was crashed, and to save taxes, he had his first registration from the chassis reassigned to his new dino. The dealer claimed this was std practice in italy at Ferrari. It sounds like you feel that is not correct, the factory would never do that. Are you saying the cars value is seriously depleted by this history? The first owner was part of the coachbuilding family carrozzeria, who had a special relationship with the factory. Silvio Fontana was his name.
Disagree. And no, such things were NOT standard practice in Italy at Ferrari. Silvio Fontana of Varazza (Savona) was not involved at all. And he did not have a special relationship with the factory. Zero. The car (the real 01668) had five (5) private owners until April 1975. Only AFTER that date the re-numbering happened. None of the first five owners was involved and certainly not the factory. The re-numbering (change of identity) happened AFTER 1975. I have the registration paperwork for all that in my archive. And yes, of course, the value is harmed with such a story. Marcel Massini
I am trying t find out the original Warranty number for my car. Its the number on the front page of the warranty book and its listed in the format N. xxxx/D. Where can I get this number from ? Would Maranello have it ? Thanks
Photos below show numbers found on Dino 246 GT chassis #03866 and these numbers (engine type 135 CS, engine number 0009674, gearbox number 865 E, body number 858 on trunk lid hinges and reservoir bracket) are matching with chassis #03866 but that car currently uses the identity of #01668. Hi Marcel, Hope you are well. Great thread! I am the owner of 02918 and was wondering if you could let know what info you have on the car and if you would be kind enough to check the engine (0008644), gearbox (389E) and body (408) numbers. I know its original colour was Verde Germoglio with a nero interior. Much appreciated. Hi Marcel, I've had a chance to find the numbers on the boot lid hinges, and they have a different number 260 on both of those. The car did have a full rebuild back in the 1990's so its possible these originate from that time? Anyway it would be interesting to know what are the original factory numbers. Thanks Marcel that's good to hear. Interesting how mine has ended up with hinges from 02640, I looked in the compendium and it shows 02640 was originally delivered to Lebanon. Thanks Tim
