Built by our very own Kevin at Mototechnique I believe :)

    Stunning car.

I think they will struggle to find 25 F40 engines though, and given the bottom end is pretty much the standard Ferrari v8 engine of the period then a 355/360 base engine would make more sense.

It's a 360 motor and I'm not sure why they said otherwise. Having exposed velocity stacks like that in an open engine bay was the tipoff it's not forced induction.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-27/a-car-obsessive-who-spent-1-million-to-update-an-infamous-ferrari

Not the first 360 powered Dino either. I wonder if he will eventually try to claim that unless he keeps calling it a bored out F40 engine.

    Another 360 dino: https://petrolicious.com/articles/best-of-both-worlds-a-ferrari-v8-powered-dino

That Dino was also built by Kevin and his team at Mototechnique. It’s his personal car.

I imagine this would only make financial sense if you had a basket case donor, but even those command top dollar it seems.

They would be better off rebodying a lesser model, damaged donor Ferrari with Dino copy panels. I doubt anymore exact copies will be built, anyone who wants similar will just go straight to Kevin anyway.

I have so say again though that the car looks and sounds superb, so well done to the owner for having the balls to get it built, as Jay said, everything looks so right, love the wheels and the headlight covers.

Says in that article they are using F40 engine block.

Logically/money wise it makes no sense (where will they source another 20+ F40 engines?)

boring out the F120A 2.9 to 3.6L when they could use the 3.6 from F360 modena????

Are they possibly making this up? So it sounds more authentic ?

I can't edit my original post, but Kevin's Dino uses a 328 engine and transmission with 355 throttle bodies. I incorrectly said 360 engine. The Bloomberg article on David Lee's car says it has a 360 transmission. so the setup is a little different. Good to know it's the same outfit doing the work.

edit #2 appears Kevin did source an F40 block for David. Used 348 heads, 328 gearbox, and 360 brakes. I stand corrected. Seems like overkill to use an F40 block.

Surprised that David and Jay haven't heard of Ing. Piero Ferrari, Enzo's other son.

Seeing a Dino with low profile tires is like seeing Le neon James in women’s high heels.
    Love everything except wheels.
No choice though with larger brakes!

I think what Kevin and his team are doing is brilliant! It makes classics such as the Dino more appealing and usable to a larger audience. As long as the original components are kept with the car and can be reinstalled makes it an even more powerful proposition. For someone like Jay Leno to appeal to it is a big deal. Jay doesn’t own a Ferrari for various reasons.

I would love to see an iteration on a Coupe but with even more discreet details such as a 16” version of the Campys.

I guess the use of an F40 block was to give the car a bit of bling factor, when a 360 block would have done the same job for a lot less money, but does not sound quite so flash. Nothing else is F40 on it so a bit of a waste really. Rad will be bespoke to F40 style spec. I imagine 4 valve 348 heads were more practical than 5 valve ones from a 355 or 360.

Hats off to Lee, and what an amazing job by Mototechnique. What I liked about these guys is that they have the guts to even contemplate a a mini-production run of resto-mod / outlaw Ferraris. It's common with Porsches but with Ferraris people seem to be always hung up on originality. These guys say, to hell with it, we are going to give it go. Good on them.

The width of a F40 engine and spacing of the cylinders must be the same as a 348 in order that the 348 cylinder heads fit the F40 block. They must also have had to find room for the oil tank for the dry sump that both F40 and 348 used.

I wonder if it was necessary to beef up the 328 gearbox to handle 400 BHP?

In Jay's video, Mr. Lee said that they bored out the 2.9 liter block to a 3.6 liter capacity.

The F40 engine is mounted longitudinally with the gearbox at the back. The 328 engine is mounted transversely as is a Dino engine. Wouldn't it be a lot of work to adapt and fit a 328 gearbox to a F40 block orientated transversely and much easier to use a 308/328 block/gearbox as Kevin did in his own Dino?

Pics are screen shots from the video of the David Lee Dino in (my) post 15.

What they would have done is resleeve with bigger liners, not bored out the block, and as a result turn into basically a 360 block anyway. I am not aware on any design features that required the use on an F40 block in this application as opposed to the obvious and less rare alternatives.

My understanding is that the blocks from 308 upto 360 are the same family of design.

Hopefully Kevin comes on board and runs us through the reasoning for the engine component combination. Stroke would have been achieved by a non F40 crank/rods I assume, the way I read it just the bare F40 block was utilised. All interesting stuff.

The F40 uses a longitudinal transmission which is separate from the engine block. This setup looks more like the 308/328 transverse engine/transmission assembly.

The transverse box bolts up to the underside of the 328 block like a sump, I believe those bolt patterns are the same on the later longitudinal blocks hence why this was possible.

This may be a naive question but I haven’t seen any reference to it online, but will a 308/328 gearbox bolt up to a Dino V6 motor?
