I have been looking to buy a 2006 S500 4matic. It would be my girlfriend's daily driver and my occasional use car. But I am wondering if I should compromise with her and get a E series 4matic instead. I notice the prices on used 06ish E series is similar in price to used 06 S500 (last year for the s500). I have to guess Mercedes Benz sells many more E class cars. I'm sure many here own the E series. I know almost nothing about the E series. Any advice on buying an E series 4matic. How do you guys like your E series?

    Thanks
    Rodney

The first question I would ask is do you need the space that the S500 provides, if you do not go with an E500 4-matic, lots more fun to drive and it might be easier for her to drive as well.

the main difference other than styling is the engine, iirc, the e class has a 6 cylinder, whereas the s class has an 8 cylinder, aside from that, i think the s class offers a few more comforts than the e class, however i don't know if these added bonuses for going with the s class are really any more noticeable.

You can get either model with a 6cyl or an 8cyl

The S500 is a replacement for my 2000 LS400. It is comparable. The E series is smaller and a step down in a sense fashion/size wise. I love the look of my old LS400 and I like the look of the S500's. They both look like they belong with my house. I've driven a S500 and I feel like a king. My girlfriend would probably like the smaller E series though.

I have a E320 CDI and I love it. This is my third Benz. I don't think you really need the size of a S500-S550, the E series has plenty enough room, if you really want to move look at the E500 or E63. The E is a solid car and is very comfortable.

    I have a 2006 E55. I considered a 2006 S class but found it was too large...like driving a boat.

Other than size the cars are the same. The E55 is as fast as the fastest S Class. The E can be equipped with 90% of the options the S Class has.

    Its all about the size.

I have a 2005 E500 4Matic and I love it. Plenty of space and it is a very easy car to drive. The newer 350s get very good fuel mileage so you may want to consider that. When I hit 50k miles or we have our second child I will probably trade it in for an E-class wagon.

    thanks for clearing that up.

it's a benz, you're going to get a good amount of comfort and performance out of either model, and from what it sounds like they're both going for around the same price, so i guess it's a style issue, good luck!

I drive an 02 S class. I've had zero problems with it, but it is big. Maybe twice a year do I fill up the back with people.

The E-class is a good call, just know that when you pick one up now, the next generation is right around the corner.

Bought it tonight for $40,000 even. 2006. 18,500 miles. Like new. Original msrp (2006)was $89,000ish. It is MB certified. They put on all new tires and all new brakes. A 4 wheel alignment and a complete oil change plus new wiper blades. I am happy at $40,000. Off and on I have been looking for the past year or so. I wanted a 2006 with low miles and the 4matic (AWD) and in silver with the dark gray interior. I was hoping for the heated steering wheel for my girlfriend and if not at least the wood steering wheel. Oh well. Car is flawless. I could not find a singe scratch etc. This one does not have the handling package. I wanted that. I want it for a luxury car. I want the best ride and comfort. S500's with AWD are rare without the optional handling package. Most have the handling package. They do not have as good of a ride because of that. Would be hard to find a similar one had I passed on this one.
