Visually what are the differences between the two? I saw both today and I couldnt tell the differences between them. They were both black and in the shade so maybe some of the lines were "hidden" from view.

About 150cc's and a ton of power and torque. The 748 is more revvy ro ride. They both handle brilliantly. Otherwise the chassis and suspension are similiar, unless you are talking about an "R" or "sps" model.

Visually there isn't much to tell them apart, other than the decal. Otherwise the rear tire and rim is usually a giveaway. The 748 comes with a 180 and the 996/998 came with 190's.

ok thanks. That explains why the 998 was faster on the track also.

It depends on the year. 748's were made starting in 1997 and they shared everything except the motor with a 916. This carried through with the 996, and these bikes all have rear facing heat extractors on the side of the fairings and the small scoop behind that. That would be the same as the yellow 748 below, which is mine:). When the 998 came out, they changed the body work slightly and got rid of the extractor and the small scoop and left only the lower NACA vent, which would be the carbon vent on the red 998R pictured below. When you start getting into the various variations on each of the models, things get more tricky. Early on you had the undesignated, S, SP, and SPS models which had different suspensions (Showa or Ohlins), and different motor modifications and in some cases, entirely different motors. I believe it was around 2001 when Ducati switched to just having undesignated (748, 996), then the S models (748S, 996S which had the Ohlins suspension and some other small goodies), and the R models. The 748R had different heads from the normal 748 as well as having lighter wheels, better suspension, and other gadgets. The 996R got the 998 bodywork and the new Testastretta engine, which would eventually power the 998, 749, 999, and some of the other special model bikes (S4R Testastretta, etc). The last of the breed for the 916 series bikes was the 998. All 998 models had the Testastretta engine and the newer bodywork. At the same time, the new 748's also got the newer bodywork. Alright, I think I got everything, hopefully most of it is correct (it is to the best of my knowledge).
