I have a bet with a coworker. I think the answer is no. Can someone here settle it for us?
I can't think of one but I think they did for the tank during WW2 but that would be a real.... EDIT V12 Maybach
This all started when we saw a 928 today. He said a friend of his had one with an inline-6. Later, he said it could have been a 924/944/968. After I posted the OP, he changed his story to "coulda been an inline-4". He's trying to weasel out of it.
I hate to say "never", but I can't think of one. If you limit it to Porsche, the car company, I'd say no. Aside from the armour (Panzer, Tiger, etc.), the other Porsche-designed vehicles seem to have used air-cooled fours. Inline engines were encouraged by aircraft applications - BMW adopted them early because of its involvement in aviation. Porsche got his start with Mercedes, IIRC, and was always involved with cars.
I'd have to agree with you. I drove an Abrams tank in the US Army. It's the only job I wanted. The career counselor at the entrance station tried to get me into other jobs. I had to argue for half an hour to get it, but he finally gave in. I loved it. Combat must be hell. I've never fired a shot in anger, so I really can't say, but it must have been quite an honor to have been on the crew of a King Tiger. I'm really proud of this photo I shot on a range in Germany 10 years ago. It took 5 rolls of film, but man, what a catch. That white circle on the ground is the shock wave spreading out. Shutter speed was 1/4000sec. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hell of a shot there Lee... checked on the tractorside and they used 2,3 and 4 cyl engines http://www.porschetractors.com/render.cfm?source=t03~Overview
Thanks. Hey did you see the April issue of R&T about ten years ago with a Porsche tractor salon feature? The author went to Germany. One bit mentioned seeing a sign that said " "Munchen", obviously a reference to snacking" LOL Oh yeah the guy finally admitted that I won the bet, but he tried weaseling out of paying me. I figured he would, so I told him I'd settle for a ribeye for lunch.
