A few Years i heard this quote that apparently Enzo Ferrari once said, but can anyone actually confirm it. I think he said this in an interview or book...It Goes like this....

" When you buy a Ferrari, you pay for the engine, and i will give the rest of the car free"

    So true.

So how much is an engine from an Enzo then if we are giving away the rest?

Great quote :) I've never seen that one before, but its is typically Enzo Ferrari.

    Some others he once said:

"Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines"

"There is no such thing as bad luck. Only situations we were unable to predict"

And a few more attributed to him:

When someone questioned the quality of the (drum) brakes of his cars, he responded, "my cars are designed to GO, not STOP . . ."

    and

"I believe that today's work conditions the future, that men pass and their work remains, and each example of their work, created for the present, is a stairway of the future."

Great quotes, staceman. (And a great avatar!)

I believe that the "brake" quote was actually from Ettore Bugatti, although Enzo was famously slow to adopt disc brakes!

Said it before and will say it again...I really don't like the way he comes off...aerodynamics are for who? take a look at the F2004, or the enzo or 360....think aerodynamics played into those? if your buying JUST the engine, buy a gallardo I suppose....and the brakes thing is just ridiculous...

Who knows what Enzo said or didnt say.... He would lay claim to certain sayings at certain times and deny them at others depending on what suited his mood and goals at the moment. One famous example is the "The horse comes before the cart, and not the other way around" when he was resisting the move to rear engine F1 cars. Later when it was obvious that the front engine era was dead.... Enzo denied ever having made that statement.

I have heard the statement "When you buy a Ferrari, you are paying for the engine. The rest you get for free". This basically in response to comments relative to the fact that in the 1950s a Ferrari engine was pretty cutting edge and a work of art.... but the chassis, suspension, brakes and general build quality were often pretty antiquated. Enzo was a product of the 1920s and 1930s when the Italian mode of racing was pretty much that all problems are solved through more horsepower.... to hell with chassis, suspension and brakes. The Alfa romeo teams response to the rising Mercedes and Auto Union dominance in the 1935 - 1936 era was not to design a more modern chassis or strive for better handling.... it was to put a second huge Alfa engine into the car thus creating the famous bimotore Alfa, that was STILL whipped by the Germans!

Enzo made lots of quotable statements.... but dont forget that Enzo was a master manipulator and captain of intrigue. He said lots of things, but who knows what his actual meaning or intentions were. Part of what makes Enzo so interesting to me is not just his business success and the fantastic cars, but what an enigma the guy was. Enzo, from all I have read, seems like a very successful business man, an incredibily interesting guy but not someone I would personally want to have to deal with on a frequent basis!

plugging into Terry's last paragraph; I recall a quote Ferrari said about himself going something like:
"I am not a great race driver or even a great engineer; I am an agitator of men."
