After more than a year in the making, the House That Derek Jeter Built, the biggest home in the county, is finished. On Wednesday, Tampa's building department issued a certificate of occupancy for the famed Yankee shortstop who calls Tampa his permanent home.

The $7.7 million house dwarfs surrounding homes on Bahama Circle in Davis Islands. Construction began on the 30,000-square-foot seven-bedroom, nine-bath mansion early last year. Jeter bought up the adjacent lots on which the home sits for $7.7 million in 2005 and 2006.

The mansion is nearly the size of a Best Buy electronics store and currently is the biggest house, square-footage-wise, in the county.

Jeter is in town this week for his charity golf tournament, but it was unknown if he's staying at the new waterfront home or if he's staying in his quaint $1 million home in Avila.

Here is a link to the on line story in the Tampa paper with pictures.......

30k sq ft the largest in the county? Wow, would have thought something else would have been larger.

I know the kid whose parents own the house on the left. Backyard doesn't have grass, lol. It's just a tennis court (only private one on Davis Island I think).

Pretty close... there's a 29k sqft place in Avila. There's a home being built on Lake Thonotosassa right now that will dwarf Jeter's new place, measuring in at 50k sqft.

Just a tad bit over built for the area.

I was thinking how they are handling the rain water runoff. There is almost no grass on the lot. By code he must retain all the roof runoff on his property unless he can dump it into the bay since he is directly n the water.

One guy living in 30,000 SF. Sure, that makes since right?

Some of the comments by readers under the story are great.

Any pics of the 50k one? I hope it look better than Jeter's.

I'm not sure why people love Davis Island so much. It's one of those US Army Corps thing where they made a landfill into an island or something. Plus, TGH is really busy and getting on and off is a pain.

60 acres, that's it??? It seems easier to find land in Montana for sale in increments of 1,000 acres rather than 60. :) My dream house would be in Montana or Wyoming. I want my own mountain and/or canyon. :) And a lake to myself.

I'd rather have 3-5k sq ft and a big piece of land than a giant house, crammed onto a lot with neighbors 50 ft away. but to each their own...

People like Davis Islands because it is very close to downtown, and it has water access of course. Safe from the 'hood too.

The 50K S.F. one is finishing soon and I'm sure it will be in the news when it does. It is owned by Don Wallace, the RV King. I guess he didn't like living on Bayshore. The new one has plenty of property with it. He has a pretty sizable car collection too, including a F1 F-car I believe.

    Ugly pile, IMO.

Looks to be well built, but the architect obviously had little clue about how to successfully pull off a period-style home.

Bland, plain and out of scale, I feel for his pocket book on the finished exterior, hope the inside makes up for it. Sorry to be so blunt, but big is not beautiful here.
He is one of the best short stops that ever played the game, I give him that!

I think the builders, roofers, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, laborers, architects, landscapers, surveyors, inspectors, lumber yards, stonemasons, granite shops, etc involved in building this house would disagree ;)
