After digesting the responses to my http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/aviatorchat-com/424583-small-aircraft-weight-cog-system.html thread I realized the system would be much more effective if coupled with density altitude.

Certainly there's no excuse for a pilot to not do the hand calculations to decide if he should or should not fly. Never the less, youtube is full of video proving people have lapses in judgment.

I envision a system that displays weight, COG, and density altitude. If you could enter the plane model it could select aircraft performance information to display your safety factor given the weight and density altitude.

I haven't seen any density altitude sensors for sale, but perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms. Are these available?

This would be a perfect app for smart phones.

I've seen smart phone density altitude calculators, but you need to enter the information by hand. I want this to be foolproof as possible. You would need a pressure sensor, temperature, and maybe humidity sensor inputs.

You only need altitude and temperature, then. That's all.

Can the G1000 calculate density altitude? It would have all the inputs.

I think what you are doing is a good idea, my brother patented a similar design for Robinson Helicopters which would dynamically show you how much power was available at any given set of conditions.

I was thinking the same thing, but I have very limited experience with it at the same time. I can imagine Garmin are working on more functionality for their avionics systems.

Quite a few airports have an AWOS (automated weather observation system) and they report Density Altitude if it is 1000 feet higher than the field elevation.

    Chapter 7.?Safety of Flight

My airport JYO (Leesbug, VA) has an AWOS-3 system so I hear the density altitude whenever I check the weather before take-off (especially in the Summer months).

With a field elevation of 389 ft and a runway length of 5500 ft, the DA at JYO is rarely a consideration for a Cessna 182. :)

Yes the G1000 calculates it, and it can be displayed on the MFD, I forget exactly what page its in, but its the chapter that shows your flight time etc....
