Hello All, I have a 2021 F8 Spider with I think a defective windshield, that I just purchased with 1300 miles 100 of which are mine. Just got the car a couple of weeks ago and the weather has been horrible. Noticed yesterday when I was at my friends detail shop, specs all over the windshield. We were cleaning the windshield in preparation for a protective film. The entire windshield has specs all over it like it got hit with a sand blaster from the distance. At first I thought maybe could it have been road damage? But its on the entire windshield in some areas heavier than other. At first glance it looked like what you would see after you polished a car and spray ended up on the class. Once we cleaned it we could see that wasn't the case. Looking at it with magnified glasses, it looks as if it is popping all over the surface. I should mention this is the heat insulated windshield. The car itself doesn't have a spot on it anywhere. Has anybody else seen or heard of this issue.

hmmm, mine has many little tiny white dots which are, in fact, from the road.... they are very susceptible to rocks etc being so low and with that angle... but yours does not sound like chips. It also seems unlikely to be a defect given your explanation... if your friend has a detail shop, has he tried to machine polish it? Also, I would try using a magic eraser with a cleaner inside and out.

Here in CO my windshields all get like that due to the mount of gravel on the roads. Where did the car live before your purchase?

Also, I have had a car pick up a couple years worth of nicks in a single minute from bad luck behind trucks

Not likely a glass defect. Small particles at high speed can do shocking damage in a short period of time similar to sandblasting. The pits are small but numerous. Weather gravel in Colorado or sand in Miami or desert dirt in Texas or even just fresh asphalt in Atlanta, you get the same result.

    Ask me how I know.

I have learned to treat glass like tires - a wear and tear item to be replaced as needed. Luckily the 458, 488, and F8 all share the same glass to my knowledge.

Replace the glass and hope for the best or put on a film, which most people find unsatisfactory on windshields for a host of reasons.

Very true. I’ve Driven behind a truck hauling sand and it sounded like rain on your windshield. Get home and small little pits everywhere. Almost like sand blasting. Luckily it was one of my daily cars.

6,500 miles on my Exoshield windshield protection film and all good. A lot of nicks in it but still clear and no damage to the windshield.

F8 and 488 windshields are definitely different. Part numbers don’t match and a side by side comparison validated the point. Don’t know about the 458.

"pops" in the glass?? Don't really know what that means. Can you feel them with your hand? like raised bumps??? If so, I have seen a certain type of pine tree that mists sap like it sneezed... thousands of tiny tiny sap drops... They usually wash right off paint, especially if it hs any kind of protection on the paint but many don't treat their glass and they could be stuck on there..... I doubt this is it either but I can't make any other sense of this as chips are simply obvious that they are chips, defected glass seems HIGHLY unlikely so the only thing I can think of is this is just 'dirty' and needs proper cleaning/polishing.

oh wait!!!! I bet the inside of your windshield has been TINTED by the previous owner! A very light percent, like 70-90% and I bet THAT is poorly installed and failing... you just didn't notice that it was tinted because it's so light..... check if there is a tint on the windshield.

Please explain how tinting on the inside might result in pitting on the outside?

he hasn't said 'pitting'... he keeps sayin 'pops' which is exactly what tiny bubbles in film would look like from the outside.

I guess am describing it incorrectly. They are pits, like it was sand blasted from the distance. I have seen rock chips in glass many times before. Its just everywhere so I thought it would be unlikely that a windshield could have that many rock chips with only 1200 miles, and the paint is pristine on the car. I have many other low profile cars that have 10, of thousands more miles and non of them are like this. Im As a loss. When driving and the sun hits the windshield its every square inch. CRAZ

Bets bet is to take it to the dealer. If it is a manufacturer defect they will replace for free. I’ve have defective windshields before and the dealer will examine it under magnification and determine if it is a defect or from damage.

I feel your pain. Rock chips accumulate more or less according to miles. The more miles, the more chips. The micro-pitting you describe (most visible when the sun is at a low angle) can happen shockingly fast over a short distance under the right conditions.

My windshield is protected with film (I can't recall the brand - my installer tired to install Clearplex but the compound curves of the F8's windshield precluded a successful install). I tolerate a bit of horizontal distortion (which my brain has largely filtered out), but I take comfort knowing that my windshield is protected from minor dings.

Is it on the inside of the glass or the outside? Are they little black specs of varying sizes/shapes throughout the windshield that feel raised like something is adherent on the inside? My detailer said he has seen those defects on many of the more recent F8’s and 812’s on the inside of the windshields straight from the factory where there are these little black specs throughout the center and entire glass randomly like something adhered and etched the glass during manufacturing and not just at the edges like the Frits that are supposed to be there for bonding purposes as these are in the center of the glass and random.

Thanks Joe, I Decided to have the windshield replaced them I'm going to have it coated. I can deal with a little distortion if I don't have to go through this again. I don't know what happened to my windscreen, but I don't like it. Hopefully they can change it without anything else in the process

I have my windshields filmed on 3 of my cars - all done in Stek. it’s now discontinued but my installer /dealer had extra on hand and just did my Urus S and it looks perfect. However, My 18 month old Taycan turbo S has 6500 miles and the film is totally trashed with tons of scratches from wipers (I live outside of Seartle). I’m debating pulling it off and could do a new film like clearplex but it’s like living with a messed up glass either way. I don’t see a way to NOT look through a windshield that has optical imperfections of some type honestly!

When you replace the film, remove the windshield wipers, clean, polish and ceramic coat the new clearplex or whichever you choose and never worry about it again. You don’t need wipers, no one does, they are the most ridiculous inventions [emoji4]
