I wonder if anyone could help with a solution. I have an 812sf with std exhaust and looking to make the tone deeper, not just louder. The issue is that I am partially deaf, so wear hearing aids. The high-pitched "F1 scream" that everyone craves, is amplified by the aids, making it rather painful and not something that my ears can tolerate. I used to own a 575M and that had a beautiful sonorous V12 tone, which I'm now trying to recreate. I appreciate these are very different motors and perhaps I'm trying to achieve the impossible with this high revving V12. I thought about installing sports cats, but I'm led to believe this will just make the car louder and won't affect the tone in any way. The X pipe will only increase the harmonics and raise the pitch. Does anyone have any experience or ideas that may help?
Hmmm, well, if you want more sound under 3000rpm, and it will be deeper, the capristo remote is great. Perhaps a Tubi catback, which to me sounds less high pitch than the rest. Or maybe talk to Brooke Exhausts and see if they can make something.
I will try fitting an exhaust controller as the first step, but I don't think that alone will create a different tone. I have sent an enquiry to BRE and will wait and see what they have to say. I have made some enquiries but the manufacturers I have spoken to, understandably just want to sell me a full inconel system with X pipe, because that's what they make. I've read on other exhaust threads on here, that just changing the back boxes does little to the sound. I was hoping someone may have done some more experimentation. I may have to go down the bespoke route and try several options in the hope of finding something that works for my situation.
Even though I’m Italian, I prefer the British growl over the Italian castrato. I put the BRE inconel exhaust and Novitec valve controller in my 812. As close a sound to the Vanquish(es) I have & had. Eddie is a great guy to work. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
That's useful info thank you Frank. Did you have the complete system including cats and X pipe, or just the rear boxes?
Did the full thing. Boxes all you need though, but since it's inconel why not! Definitely more low end growl.
The main reason for the high pitch V12 sound is the headers layout. The 550, 575 and up to 599 GTB has headers with 6-2-1 design. With the 599 GTO (SA Aperta) and the following F12 / 812 Ferrari went to 6-1 headers which raises the pitch. Doesn't have the GTS a deeper sound, caused with the particle filter ? Daniel
Thanks Daniel, that's very useful. Looks like unless I change the headers ( not likely) I'm going to have to accept it. It's early days yet and I haven't had the car very long, but I'm not really loving this V12. Horses for courses!! I'll give it some more time before I decide if I keep or get rid of it.
Replace the muffler. The sound level of the exhaust pipe of a car is closely related to the muffler. If you want to make the sound of the exhaust pipe lower, you can replace the muffler on the exhaust pipe. 2. Make the exhaust port at the tail end smaller, and the sound output will also decrease.
Not liking this V12? One of the best engines ever made? Like I said, a pioneer! [emoji6] Could you add the original 812 GPF cats? Add additional catalysts? I believe the novitec exhaust, just the cat back, is softer with the valve closed than the stock exhaust. Open is a different story I’m sure.
Oh yes, the sound of the SF is just to die. But if you have trouble with your ears, it's another thing. Isn't it possible to recalibrate hearing aids or something else to reduce these frequences that make you problems ? Sorry i have no idea if this is possible, just an idea. Daniel
Rolazz, jou Afrikaans is nie te slegs nie. I’m heading to SA next week. Surprising how many F cars are down there. I see you’re in the UK now. I simply opened my valves on my F12 and it sounds better in the RPM range it was too quiet before. Obviously a remote would be better but I didn’t bother and am very happy. Good luck on your quest. Having driven (22k mls) in my 812 sf "non GPF" model and then recently a "GPF" model, I would say the "GPF" model is certainly different in terms of tone and lack of "F1 scream". Not sure if that observation helps as you've only just acquired yours, but might be worth a "demo" drive as part of your options appraisal.
A bit rusty now, but... Tabakboer van Rhodesië, het in Durban skoolgegaan, en die universiteit van Stellenbosch! I'm going to try experimenting with some different exhaust setups and I'll try and report findings. Appreciate the replies of advice and help from all.
I have tried a few different set ups Avoid the X Pipe is you don't want higher pitch, although it does smooth the note significantly I currently have: Decat Downpipes, custom silenced mid box and standard back boxes It sounds slightly more muscle car than when I had X Pipe and Cats and smaller back boxes Crucially the two banks are not actually connected, standard set up has a small connection- H Pipe, and an X Pipe forces the two cylinder banks of exhaust flow to blend which I guess smooths out the lower notes and amplifies the higher notes Hope that gives some direction
Thanks Charlie, as you're in the UK, who did the custom mid box for you? Is it not too loud with decat?
It was a mostly race exhaust builder near Oxford, will look up the name It was insanely loud without mid box, with standard back boxes it's actually not much louder than standard when valves closed If you're not far from me come and try mine, I'm in Surrey
You will need custom headers to achieve this. 6 to 2 rather than 6 to 1 would give you the deeper growl from the 599 and earlier models.
Here are a few clips of the BRE. As I stated earlier I prefer the low end deep growl of the Vanquishes I’ve had. The exhaust not of the stock 812 is not as nice, rather weak at normal posted speeds. At high revs it sounds nice but I much prefer the engine intake noise over the exhaust. Regardless, the Aston low end growl is the best OEM exhaust out there and is untouchable at posted speed limits/DD. The only way to get that in an 812 is to replace the OEM boxes; however, that comes at the expense of loudness, which is great if you are a racer-boy but pretty annoying after 15 min. Here are a few clips of the BRE at slower speeds. It's not possible to do sound deeper because if you will see BRABUS G65 / S65 V12 which is the deepest exhaust between cars they use big diffusors on back side. But you cannot put big diffs on 812sf, so here only one solution - use carpisto valves exhaust, when valves is closed - sound is deep, u can do it manually. https://capristoexhaust.com/product/ferrari-f12-812-superfast-twin-sound-exhaust-system-no-remote/
