I just got new home brochures from my neice. WOW! New homes on lakes, 5 Bdrm's for -$600K. The town looks cool and it's real tempting to bail from N. CA. I gotta visit to scope things out.

I had a similar post a few months ago, but after seeing the home prices, Austin looks tempting!

Austin is great!!! Several transplants from CA already, in TX they do have inexpensive housing compared to CA but a 5 BR home that is $600k might have 10'x12' rooms. My house is a custom home with 19'x21' rooms(4) and 1 14'x16' which is the maids quarters off the kitchen(no I don't have a live in maid:D)...The master is 19'x32' with sitting srea and mini bar:cool:

If I could live in Austin I would in a heartbeat, great big little city:):):)

Austin is great. You should at least check it out. Good weather, nice lake, college girls, good night life. Traffic is not the best, but better than Socal.

Just moved here 2 days ago. Loved it hwen visiting, loving it here already.

From SoCal and Scottsdale = very affordable. Watch out, RE taxes are lik 2.7%, but no state income.

Humid as hell too, and I heard it isn't too bad yet. I'm looking into buying some land when other people figure out it's low priced here.

If I ever move out of Houston and stay in Texas, it'll be Austin. No doubt.

How about the heat? I'm not a real hot weather person, but I could probably deal with it. I hear is does cool down around November for a couple of months!

In N. CA, my electric bill runs about $350/Mo and my propane runs about $475. How does this compare?

Heat is bad, but's mostly June, July, August. Temps will be in the 90's for the most part.

Peter: I'm looking at some properties in Austin too. I was there 3 weeks ago to visit a friend who moved from San Francisco. I was only there for the weekend, but is definitely a nice place.

I might plan a trip again next month to check out some property.

Can anyone recommend a good agent?

The CA people seeing home prices and saying 'Thats cheap!' is what's driving up the home prices in Austin. The Austin real estate market has been nuts for a while. Not California nuts, but nuts by TX standards.

Peter, what's in Richardson? Besides me....

How does Austin compare to Houston. There is a chance I may be moving into the Texas area within the nest 8 months. I've only been looking at Houston so far. Should I consider Austin?

Austin has more of a small town look and feel to it. I think it has the best barbecue around and is cool palce to be at. Also there is the hill country nearby (though "hill" is a bit of an exaggeration - think of it as some minor ups and downs).

The de-merits relative to Houston are: A) More humidity by a small amount and b) Small airport with limited connections. The latter is v. important to me as I travel a lot. If that doesnt matter, Austin is a better bet.

If I were moving to Texas, Austin would be the first place I'd consider. 2nd would be San Antonio or Dallas. Houston would be way down my list.

No offense intended to our Houston friends. :)
