My wife and I will be making a brief trip to Miami next month. We miss the Cuban cuisine we enjoyed when we lived there for many years. Back then La Carreta and the Versailles were the go to places for authentic Cuban food. Is this still the case or are there other places worth trying?

Those are my two favorites when I am down there.

I always recommend El Carajo which is Spanish Tapas. https://el-carajo.com/

Thanks. We used to go to a white tablecloth Spanish place on 8th called Málaga. That’s where I got to know Ferdie Pacheco. It’s a parking lot now. :(

    Restaurants to Visit:

Versailles: Authentic Cuban cuisine. One of the first to be established in Miami. Notable items are the Lechon Asado with Congris (Grey rice) and tostones. Their guarapo (cane juice) is very good. Other than that, you can enjoy their daily special. Very casual, somewhat cheesy décor, and always busy (24x7).

Sergios: My family has been going here for 50+ years. They now have several locations. Everything is good. I always go half and half with Marisol on a Cuban Steak sandwich (pan con bistec) and an omelet sandwich (pan con tortilla). Their watermelon juice is very good. If they have the Crema de Malanga, I would try that too.

El Rey de Las Fritas: This is a must. Several locations and one by the airport. Authentic Cuban hamburger. Only place in the US where I have been able to get one. Get the original. It is perfection. Small size so you can always get some appetizers. Very casual.

El Palacio De Los Jugos: Several locations. Very informal. Cuban food by the pound. Hundreds of options. All delicious. Their chicharrones are delicious (combine with Cuban bread).

La Carreta: Traditional Cuban food. Everything is good.

    General Recommendations:

Cuban breakfast is a must (very basic). All places are very casual and inexpensive. The key is to do a café con leche (sweetened) and dip the buttered Cuban toast in it. This is magical.

Always end every meal with un Cafecito Cubano (shot of very powerful and sweet Cuban coffee).

Other items to enjoy: Ham croquets, empanadas and pastellitos (guava and ground beef are my two favorites. Guava and cream cheese is my second favorite).

Cuban bakeries have a small window that you can walk up to, order you snack, enjoy on the spot, and drive out. This is something that you only see in Miami. They call it, “La ventanita”.

I like El Mago de las Fritas for burgers (and other items). Very casual of course.

I also like Enriqueta's just off Biscayne Blvd. Also very casual.

I think these are both more a little off the beaten path, and you will see fewer tourists at them. Virtually none at El Mago...
