Looking for a powder coat mfg./color code that is close to original Ferrari 1978-9 308. Have found three paint codes but nothing that crosses to powder.
    Thanks for reading!!!

I know it is a personal choice but I don't recommend powder coating. It chips and cracks especially around the lug bolt holes. It also blends out the Cromodora lettering. Also, take care if you do that the process doesn't over heat the wheels as I understand it can wreck the wheels. I am hoping to have it removed from my wheels if possible. Just my $.02

DO NOT REMOVE THE DOW-17 COATING FROM THE MAGNESIUM WHEELS !!!

    Sorry for yelling :)

This is exactly what you'll end up doing if you use abrasive media to remove the original paint. The Cromodora wheels are Mg. The greenish DOW-17 applied per Mil-M45202 spec coating is very special, and a lot of fun :)($$$:() to replace if removed.

Yes, after some research, your comments, and now the powder coat vendor backing away, the only path is to simply clean the wheels and touch-up the small nicks!!! Thanks to all!

Actually I think Dow-17 is a anodizing solution from the 40's for protecting magnesium. Surely there must be newer, better, cheaper processes?

I've just been through the process of researching how to get my 16" magnesium Speedlines restored correctly. After much time talking to specialists and trying to separate the sales pitch from the fact (and occasionally the bull$h1t) I settled on having the wheels restored by a chap who used to work for Dymag wheels in the UK and now works as a specialist restoring magnesium wheels.

It seems that, in order for mag wheels to remain stable, they must be taken back to bare metal (gently!) and then chromate dipped. I am aware of the argument about excess heat potentially causing the metal to anneal, however, a carefully applied powder coat will not approach this temperature. Also, where magnesium wheels are most used in production today (motorcycles) they are invariably powder coated rather than painted. For this reason I took the decision to follow the advice I was given by people who specialise in these wheels and opted for powder coating rather than paint.

I think the key thing here is to make sure that you give the wheels to someone who understands how magnesium wheels need to be treated and has the necessary experience.

Agreed. I would point out that the wheel bolts will crush and crack the powder coat at the point of contact. So it may be wise to recheck bolt torque from time to time and/or have the powder coat removed in those areas.

I think the wheel bolt seats are steel inserts? Best practice would be to mask them.

What is the Silver Color called? OK, No Powder Coating. If I am going to paint them, I would like the color to be close to the original "whitish" silver. Thanks!

My wheels have Ferrari on the front and Cromodoro - Magnesio on the back. I will not be Powder Coating them. Had a very bad experience with a set of Magnesium Valve Covers on my Alfa Romeo Montreal. If you powder coat magnesium, it has to be cleaned and de-greased properly, and then pre-heated and finally the powder applied in low temperature oven. Go with the paint I say. Much safer, and it can get repaired when required. Still waiting for someone to give me a reference color number / code, whatever, for the wheels. Thanks!
