I just removed the intake plenum on my 1981 308 GTSi (US) and found what appears to be crinkle (?) black paint only on the bottom. I hadn’t bothered to check what was correct for that year, but since everything was natural aluminum (valve covers, timing covers, plenum) I figured that’s just the way it was.

What’s a good way to strip the remaining paint without damaging the plenum?
What’s the correct finish for this year and model?
How is it typically applied? (Does it need to be catalyzed, or will a rattle can suffice?).
Is the word “Ferrari” on top of the plenum supposed to be bare, or painted? How is that accomplished?

Pretty sure that it (the vast majority) should be (satin) crinkle black with the top of the "Ferrari" lettering bare (I'm having a vague recollection that someone might have posted that some very early Mondial8 were bare from the factory):

I've got about a half dozen different 308i-2V engine pics that I've saved over the years, but all of the intake plenums look like they've been repainted (even this pic I posted -- it looks a little too "glossy" and too fine, and too uniform, of a crinkle IMO). This "new" one at Maranello Concessionaires is the same pattern, and shows the more satin, larger crinkle, non-glossy finish that matches what is left on the bottom of yours (but even it needs to be repainted). Click on the individual pictures to get a larger, better look:

So the throttle body is not painted as well, or is that only on later models?

If you look at a new 2Vi throttle body at Maranello Concessionaires, it's unpainted, and all of the 2Vi engine photos I have show it being unpainted.

An 81 came from the factory with a wrinkle black plenum.

1980 models were bare unpainted aluminum, but it is your car so you should do whatever looks best to you.

    Mine, decidedly not OEM:

Wow. Those red accents look great with the wires, lines, and hoses! I wasn’t necessarily hoping to improve how mine looks, but since I’ve got the plenum off and now know that it’s supposed to be black, it’ll be a simple process to restore the proper color.

QUESTION: where did you get that air intake tube? That’s pretty sharp!

It's been a while; I don't recall right off the top of my head (If no one else chimes in to answer, remind me and I'll see if I can dig in my receipts / records).

I was pretty much forced into buying it at the time since the OEM corrugated tube had a hole worn into it via contact with the underside of the deck lid.

When they first came out with the bare aluminum plenum chamber it was really disliked and many were painted wrinkle black very early on.

VHT makes the crinkle finish black in a rattle can and it works well if you follow the directions and spray on a nice warm sunny day. You'll also have better long term results if you put a primer coat on first.

I was going to say the "size" of the crinkles is dependent on the application....it's in the instructions..

A $12 rattle-can of VHT spray paint and a sanding block can do wonders:

The remaining paint came off really easily with some orange-based gel paint stripper. I probably could have just knocked it off with a wire brush, but I had the stripper so I used it. Sprayed it off with metal parts cleaner (brake clean), then wiped it down with wax/grease remover (per paint instructions), then masked and painted.

Well, mine’s got a hole worn in it and the OEM replacement I just tried to order is out-of-stock. Does anyone know of an aftermarket solution that fits properly?

The biggest challenge I see is how to keep it clean without the additives in the local water supply changing the color to a milky white overtone.

Looks like I bought the intake tube from a company in Alabama called Motovanti back in 2005.

Their website was motovanti.com, but they appear to no longer be around.

After final install. I probably wouldn’t have removed the plenum just to paint it, but I had to remove it to chase a coolant leak so I went ahead and spent the extra time to clean and refinish it.

Nice job! I made a video of how I restored by 85 QV plenum. The steps are the same, though I used red crinkle powdercoat. Posting here in case it helps anyone in the future...
