We've isolated the likely cause of a total loss of ignition in cylinder bank 1-4 on my car ('85 QV Euro) to a faulty timing sensor (aka Flywheel Pulse Unit Crank Sensor, Angular Speed Sensor, TDC Sensor, etc. -- Ferrari part 119502). My car has three of these and I intend to replace all of them while I'm at it.

QUESTION: What's the best way to get access to these to remove and replace them? I'm assuming I should remove the LR wheel and housing liner, but do others have any tips or suggestions to save me some frustration?

I've already read posts about alternate part numbers, testing the units, and watching out for loose washers on removal -- so at this point ease of access is my main concern.

    Thanks!

The bottom one (for the front bank) is "simply" accessible (if you have thin triple jointed fingers) from the bottom of the engine. The top two (front top for rear bank and rear top for tachometer) are accessible, believe it or not, by removing the distributor caps. As for the harness connectors; good luck.

The reality is all three are a pain to replace.

Search for threads on this. There are a few. I did all of mine on rear jackstands. Sitting down minimizes the cursing. Make sure you drill the larger hole on the sensor for the screws. Don't drop the screws, so a magnetized tool might be in order.

    Here's mine:
I moved the oil separator, but some of those lines are so snug, I couldn't get them off.
I removed the oil cooler air duct and the oil cooler itself. It makes it easier.
A small 1/4" ratchet just squeaks under the water cooler pipe and barely has enough room to ratchet.
And I used a magnet to fish the washer & nut out of the area so they don't drop in.

To put the new sensor on:
I've glued (rubber cement) the washers over the new sensor holes so they'll go over the studs.

I had one go bad on my 84qv. With help of fellow fchatter we replaced it through the drivers side wheel opening. T Ruttlands have them for around $150

So do the connections plug right up with the ones in the link you posted? On my ‘80 i the ends needed to be cut off and a different fitting used to plug into the original harness on the car. Thanks..

Link works OK for me -- are you logged in on the device you are using?

Good pics in that link showing the different early and late connector styles.

As I recall, there were two different ones available. I know for mine, they came with the correct connector. I believe mine came from SuperformanceUK
