this thread is devoted to solve some of the misteries on the WING matter for many lamborghini fans the lamborghini countach and its massive otrageous wing MUST come toegether.... but i must confess i was not the biggest fan of the mythical countach aero foil or "alettone" till i finally got to appreciate the different models and shapes tks to all the interesting posts and infos shared on the matter by Tony let's start to say there are not 2 kind of wings (big and small) for the countach, as many think..... how many? we will find out soon not counting the W.Wolf cars wings, i will only talk about wings on production countach and i start from the the older one: the "moody" wing - tipo 1 this wing is adjustable, has the big and low shape, has NO side plates, Wolf-like big mounts and side screws hold the mounts toegether attach pics of this model on serie 1 VIN 1038 this wing was originally put on only S1 cars, but not all winged S1 cars had this kind of wing! the "moody" wing - tipo 2 this wing is adjustable, has the big and low shape, has NO side plates, SMALLER mounts and side screws hold the mounts toegether again this wing was originally put on Serie 1 LP400S cars BUT not only on S1, since early S2 cars had this variant on to attach pics of this model on serie 1 VIN 1036 (Tony's pics) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
of course i am not going to say this thread will put the end word on the wing matter.....let's not forget we are talking old lamborghinis here LOL i am going to post only reliable and proved infos, still i am sure i will do some mistakes ..... as i am confident the experts will help (and correct may be...) me as usual any help and info on the matter is more than welcome!
Type 1 - Moody big wing (no end plates) with 'buttressed' mounts a la Wolf cars (seen on 1002, 1030 1038 et al). Rarissima! Type 2 - Moody big wing (no end plates) with 'canted' mounts seen on the rest of the LP400S cars. Type 3 - Big wing with end plates with 'canted' mounts seen on LP400S Series 3, LP500S, LP5000QV (Euro) and Annivesario (Euro). Type 4 - Small wing with with end plates with 'upright/tall' mounts seen on LP5000QV (USA) and Annivesario (USA).
the "moody" wing - tipo 3 this wing is adjustable, has the big and low shape, has NO side plates, SMALLER mounts and side screws hold the mounts toegether it has a "O" cut for the adjustment this wing was originally put on only LP400S S2 cars attach period pics of this model on a silver serie 2, EE plates on, car brand new at factory (pics from Marchet and Coltrin 1981 CT book) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
so far we are at 3 wings and only counting the no side plates wings (aka moody ) the tipo 2 and tipo 3 difference is only the cut on the mounts for the adjustment it is a "U" cut for the tipo 2 and a "O" cut for the tipo 3 please take note all 3 moody wings have side screws to hold the mounts toegether (internal sructure and "round" alluminium covers) and are all adjustable and so not merely for the look they are all rare items, as Joe stated the tipo 1 Wolf-like being the rarest and the tipo 2 "U" cut somewhat the more common
i agree it is almost the same, Joe still it is different, slightly but different the internal adjustment part are also different it is also interesting to see it will take us to the 4th kind of wing that has something in common with number 3 and something with number 5 some more wings to come ...
All these wings are confusing me...I opt out (I do love them without side plates though) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Would interesting to see some kind of diagram of where the position of the wing itself in relation to the car ends up given the differences in the mounts...
Tony's red lowbody/w/Bravo's and type 2 moody wing is just a beautiful Countach, looks better every time I see it!!!
LOL Ken, you have your reasons...otherwise it is interesting to note how many variants these wings came in it again show these cars were really hand made, with small and big changes constantly put in production i to love the early wings, both for their look and because they serve a purpose
Hi Joe, With regard to Type 4, I've seen them on Euro QVs also, so I guess they used the on some Euro cars also. Maybe when they ran out of the Type 3s?
To be honest, I never noticed before that there were different wings used on the Countach. What could be the reason of it though? There seem to be so many small differences between the pre-Audi Lamborghinis. Even on the Diablo. Some are such small details that only experts will notice.
I would love to see any raw data that supports the theory that wings on our Countachs served ANY purpose other than looks. I always took them off (when I had cars that came with them in the past) and I found the cars to be faster at higher speeds. This has been discussed before and I remember Go Mifune espousing the same sentiments...
I'm with you! I took mine off too and like the look much better. Your car is awesome, especially with the gold accents!
I figured I would add my contibution to this thread in what I saw on ebay the other day. Is this correct as in factory tooling? Or is this from some aftermarket type outfit? Anyone? If I were to guess I would say aftermarket as it appears that both halves bolt together and then something is case in place as opposed to being formed and then seamed together. car is sure faster without no, i do not have any gallery testing but sure early wings looks shaped in the right way to add some downforce to the back i felt the car to be more planted while braking from hi speed with it, even at the lower settings
