I’m new to the forum and am thinking of becoming a first time owner. I’m looking at a new or slightly used 488 Spider . I was told by a dealer that for a new car I can expect to wait 18 months . They have a lightly used one with most of the options and color I’d want. The price of the car is above the new MSRP .I was told that you always pay above MSRP for a Ferrari as it’s based on market value. The questions I have is does this time frame to get a new car sound right and how much should one expect to pay above MSRP for a 488 Spider. Thanks .

A used car is a used car. If it is pretty new, a 10-20% off MSRP should not be unreasonable and, of course, having that said, all owners would love to sell their used cars at a premium.

Most 488 spiders are still going 10% above msrp. No way in hell are you getting 10% -20% off around this time

LOL, just cause you get 10-20% off on your used Civic, doesn't mean the same applies to Ferrari

^This person does not know what they are talking about.

Your dealer is correct. I own a 2013 458 spider and a 2018 488. I bought the 458 used in 2013 with 1000 miles and paid $325K ($10K over msrp). The 488 I ordered new and it took over 2 years from order to delivery. I paid MSRP.

You will likly be able to find a 488 speced the way you want for less than MSRP (maybe 10K- $20K) if you buy from a private party since it is no longer a brand new model that just came out and private party cars will be less than dealer cars.

Having tried to buy a 488 spider in December I was not able to find one at less than sticker except a few that had a MSRP ~ 375-390 k. I did however order one with a ~ 6 month delivery. There are no spiders at 10 - 20 pct off. That’s just nonsense.
    Best , Kirk.

The person who wrote what is quoted above this message saying 10-20% off clearly has never been 488 Spider shopping as of this writing...

Sorry bro- as others have stated. Dream on. What the dealer told the OP is correct. Used spiders sell at premium. New is at msrp with a massive wait.

Find a broker... they usually have access to the wholesale market or will negotiate on your behalf and find the car/price you want. Lots of cars that are for sale but not really known to the person who is calling around ferrari dealerships or analyzing cars.com, cargurus, etc.

If you want to get into the new car market eventually and get the limited edition or special models then stick with your local dealer even if costs you a little extra (it'll pay off in the long run). If you never want to play in the new car market then go the broker route.

A dealer will first always push a pre owned car and make money off you and then sell you a new one at sticker. That’s how the the game is played. Want to play, but used then new. Even if it comes at a premium, which it typically always does. No way in hell you’ll find 20% off... not any time soon and well into a completely new product line.

I’m just trying to get a feel for how much should I expect to pay over MSRP for a new Ferrari from a Ferrari dealer. I think then this becomes the “new” base price for the car when it’s bought as a used car. I expect it never goes back to MSRP . Is this not true ?

Expect to pay MSRP for a new car.

Expect to pay over MSRP on a Pre Owned , current model , which is usually the gateway to purchasing a new car at MSRP.

It is country dependent, but for a new (or almost new, i.e. a few months with a few miles) car with immediate availability it is indeed common to have to pay a premium - specially if lead times are high if ordering the same model.
Apparently the lead times for the 488 have been reduced (maybe less so for the spider), so the premium should be limited; getting an available 812 now probably requires more.
For cars released some time ago (which is the case of the 488), unless they are from a specially sought after Special Series, you should also be able to get a used one (more than one year old) at less than MSRP - but it will be more expensive if it's from a dealer than if it's a private sale.

It depends on how long you are going to hold this car. If its still in demand in the market, you likely will be able to sell it some where in between MSRP and what you paid. Consider you will have transaction costs such as sales tax and any possible brokerage costs (acquiring and disposing). What will happen is the cars will come down to sticker and then they will dip below it. You can learn what the depreciation will be like by having a look at pre-owned 360s, 430s, and 458s and track how they depreciated. These cars will depreciate. Its just a question of time.

If you are not sure if this is all for you, sensible advice might be to buy a pre-owned 458 Spider. They will still depreciate but probably not as much. Try that for 12-24 months and see what you think. Its still modern, still a great looking car, very fast, and your risk will be lower.

Also depends on location. For most parts of the US, both 488 variants are going below MSRP.

The only way you can get one at MSRP is to either spec it or buy one that someone didn't take delivery of. The only other option is pay over MSRP for used. If you haven't bought used before and you spec, I would expect 18 months wait. You could probably get a 488 for under MSRP now but not a Spider. Wait another year on the Spider and buy the 488 now, you will probably enjoy it just as much as the Spider.

cold called ferrari dallas. Chatted with one of the best sales guys I have ever come across...Phil. They had a new-new 488 (black) available now for MSRP.
The also offered to order a spider..5-6 month wait...for MSRP. Nothing over for either. I was told (by others) that ferrari is looking for a new crop of clients to ride the wave for the next 2 generations of ferraris. Many existing clients are holding on to their Speciales etc and not 'upgrading'.

Contact various Ferrari dealers and private parties. Find the used cars you like and negotiate.
. You can buy a used Ferrari from a dealer outside your assigned territory. It’s only news cars which are territory restricted. And let us know about your deals.
