Guys, I realize this isn't Ferrari related but I was hoping with all the car knowledge here, someone could provide so assistance.

I am considering purchasing a REPRODUCTION 1956 Porsche 550 Spyder built by California Spyders in Orange California. It is better known as the Vintage brand, not to be confused with the version built by Beck.

The guy who is selling it (listed on EBay) gives this narrative:

"One just like this just sold at Barrett Jackson for $39,000 plus the 10% fees. This is your chance to buy a nicer one for less money and no big auction premium. Take your time and look at all the photos. You will see that great time and expense went into making this the highest quality reproduction as well as an accurate "James Dean" look alike in every detail. It has all the correct badging including the grill badge. It has correct seats with racing belts, a correctly finished trunk and highly detailed engine. It has only 515 miles since new and looks and drive as new in every respect.

The car's current owner is a good friend of mine and an avid collector of great cars and bikes. Since he purchased the car just a few years ago he has kept it in his personal climate controlled "Museum Like" facility where it has been meticulously maintained and rarely driven. Everything on the car works as new."

ANYONE GIVE ANY ADVICE TO ME ON THIS TYPE OF PURCHASE??

    Thanks!!!

    Joe

I really like the idea of these cars - small, light, cheap and go like stink. I looked at one a while ago but it seems like you can buy a great one with all of the goodies, with a Beck pedigree for about $26k so I think I'd pass on this one

In that past, Beck's were always considered to be the best. Does anyone have knowledge as to whether these are thought of as better then Beck, same as Beck or not as good as Beck?

Beck seems to be the more "mainstream" choice. In looking at the components. it appears the Vintage uses higher qulaity parts, but I'm sure there are people with hands on expertise who can better opine. Seems like either one would be pretty simple to work on since the engines are small block 4 cylinders.

I am very familiar with these cars. Beck is the top of the class and will bring the biggest bucks. You can build a Beck 550 spyder for 30k. So you have to discount, discount and then you must discount from there. I sold a Beck speedster in number 10 condition with all Porsche parts and Porsche engine in August with 3000 miles for $22k and that was all the money. It cost $27.5 to build. Non-Beck spyder in number 10 condition....$20K, discount from there. Jon in Delaware

I almost bought one before I settled on my 328. There are more options than you think. There are a couple of different engine, brake, tire/wheel, as well as some aesthetic options as well. I've never driven one but I really like them. I don't think you are going to be comfortable driving the car in anything less than perfect weather. I think this is why you see a lot of used cobra replicas on the market. I'd buy one, I bet they are more fun to drive than a lot of production cars. I think Car and Driver (or some other magazine) did a review of them a while ago and was very complementary.

I really like the Intermeccanica's. J. Stefano (sp?) sells them in NC (I think of the 356C variety). Light, fun, easy to work on. As long as you don't try and pass it off as an original, I think they are cool.

They are hard to resell and drop like stones in price.

Thanks Dave. I have been swamped with a business transaction which finally got some closure, so I have more time on my hands!! If the weather looks good Saturday, I will definitely be there!

Hope all is well with you.

Thanks Jon. I shouldve known to start with you. So, how long does the building process take or would it be better to find a used one? I haven't been able to find a place to locate them, other than EBay....

I agree with you Adam. My rationale for buying it is for use on days when I want a "convertible" versus the 430 coupe. Think it will be fun for that purpose and because I love the lines of the 550. I will keep you posted.

So what your saying is maybe 4 days a year, since I never saw the top of the 360 down.

Well then by all means yes, find the right car and snatch it. The 550 is a pretty car.

Joe, you really do use them very very very little. Thats why I sold mine. I put 700 miles on mine in two years. You know I drive my cars so that says alot. They are fun. Especially because you feel like your driving on the edge of mechanical grip and you look at the speedo and your doing 60MPH. Tough to get a ticket in one. I would look long and hard before settling on one. Like said previously they drop like rocks in value vs build price until they hit maybe 70% of original value. Then they just dont go down much form there. They NEVER go up in value even when the original versions go through the roof. They dont get dragged along with the momentum. Buy one for 70% of build price. Look long and hard for a good one. Keep it for a few years and have some fun. Plan on taking a year to get someone to buy yours and get most of your money back. They get alot of attention!! Jon in Delaware

Sounds like great advice, as usual Jon. You said it when I bought the 430 coupe, that I would miss the feeling of driving a convertible. While I have no second thoughts about my choice of coupe versus spider for the 430, I do need something to fill the gap for beautiful days where the need for a top down is essential. I don't want something that I am going to fell bad about leaving in the garage and not driving often; hence, my desire to find something "cool" that won't cost more than $20k or $25k. I will be patient on this acquisition and keep my eyes open to other vehicles which might equally fill the gap.

Hope all is well with you. Haven't seen you in quite some time. Our deal was publicly announced so I am able to come out from hibernation more often now!! Hope to see you soon?
