    Hi all ---

Well the title pretty much says it all... I'm new to the Ferrari world and looking into purchasing my first f-car -- a 328. I've found a couple in the area here that seem attractive, and after a whole bunch of reading here on this board and on the Internet in general , I've come to the conclusion that I now know enough about these cars to realize that I most certainly need an expert opinion prior to purchasing one of these.

Who would you recommend I contact regarding a PPI? Also, how have you generally handled the PPI process in the past -- does the mechanic travel to the car at the seller's facility or does the car travel to the mechanic (under its own power or via truck?) where the mechanic has access to his shop, tools and other resources?

Love to hear your experiences, recommendations and general good advice!

    Chris

I would recommend Bill Pollard at Sport Auto in Gaylordsville, Ct. My only regret is that I didn't bring my car to him sooner. He knows your car inside and out, he is really into what he does, and he will talk to you as long as you want and give you great advise. I could not recommend him highly enough. PM me if you need his phone #.

Chris, where in CT is the car in question? If it's in the Southwest end, I'd say Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, the local Ferrari dealer. If it's North/East of Hartford, then consider sending it to one of the shops in the Boston area - Independent Ferrari Service (S. Easton, MA), Boston Sports Car (Weston, MA), KTR (Ayer, MA) or Ferrari of New England (W. Newton, MA).

As for cost, it's up to you and the seller, but generally, the buyer will pick up the cost of the PPI. The seller usually drops off the car if it's close, but if the shop is farther away, the buyer usually picks up the cost of the flat-bed. But, again, it's all negotiable....

    vty,

I'd avoid Miller in Greenwich. Unless you have $100 bills falling out of your pockets, they really don't want to talk to you. If the car is in southwestern CT, then try Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley NY (Just over the Tappan Zee bridge), they are a certified, Enzo blessed, official dealer. Or you could try Ferrari of Long Island, as they are a dealer too, but further away.
There are also lots of independants on Long Island that you could try, search around the archives of F-Chat NY/Tri-state for independants. And also, just down the road from Miller is Jean-Louis' LeMans 24 Garage. I've never used LeMans 24, but have heard only good things about them. Just don't ask them to do a CT emissions test (they got busted falsifying one on a Ferrari a couple of years ago, and got made an example of...).
Hope this helps and best of luck with your 328 purchase!!!!

Try Glastonbury Foreign auto or www.f40.com. Glastonbury Foreign is very familiar with 308/328 series. You can also try Ninos Auto 203-393-3434 in Hamden, CT and speak with Joe. PM me if you have any other questions.

I wholeheartedly agree with idoc's assessment. There are a significant number of qualified places that I could bring my 328 to that are much closer than the 2.5 hour drive to Bill's, but I wouldn't even think of bringing it to one of those garages based on the way Bill treats people and their cars. It doesn't get any better than Sport Auto.

I am cautious with LeMans 24. I used them twice and both times they got the mechanical problems wrong. Fortunately, I asked for estimate first.

I've been to WWOC and purchased a car from them and they are great.
I used Performance Outfitters from Stamford for the PPI. They sell and service a lot of F-cars. WWOC folks were impressed with them and I was very very pleased. Their number is 203-975-1188. Todd, Frank or Brian will definitely help you.

Wow! Thank you all very much! It sounds like, both from the percentage of votes and the quality of the praise, that Bill at Sport Auto is the way to go. I'll most certainly be calling him.

And I hope to be able to meet many of you all in the near future (along with a new (to me) little red toy). Great bunch of folk here on this board.

    Hi Chris,

We never did hook up a few weeks ago (my last attempt to catch up with you was a phone call on my way to a track event at Watkins Glen -- left a message on your voice mail). Have you made your purchase? If you're still looking for someone to do a PPI or you're now looking for a mechanic for (hopefully) your new 328, I enthusiastically recommend John Tirrell at IFS in South Easton, MA (508-238-4224). Wayne Carini at F40 Motorsports pointed me in John's direction just after buying my 308 a few years ago and I've been extremely happy with him. The catch is he's 2 hours away from Glastonbury, but it's well worth the travel. Many of us in town have John service our cars.

Hopefully we'll cross paths sometime in the near future... I'm also the membership chair and Connecticut Chapter President of the New England Region of the FCA, and joining the FCA will enhance your Ferrari experience tremendously.

Lastly -- just curious... do you have a brother Tom (GHS Class of 1978)?

    Regards,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie!

Wow... I don't know how I missed your reply to this thread -- I feel like such a slug for leaving you hanging like that!

Yes, I did indeed purchase the 328 I wrote you about originally, and I (somewhat) recently got an application for membership to the FCA from Peter Lombardo, which I'll be filling out very soon. I can't wait to meet some of you guys, and get together for a bunch of the local events.

For now, though, I've been occupied Ferrari-wise with getting a 30K major service done on the 328, which was expertly performed by Bill Pollard at Sport Auto. Very uneventful and no surprises, so that's good. The difference is like night and day -- I thought the car was running pretty well before going to "the spa", but now... :D I wish it were spring instead of fall...

The only wrench in the works so far happened yesterday -- the car has sprung a bit (!) of a coolant leak in an area, I think, that Bill didn't work on during the major. I kind of expected some of this type of thing -- I get the sense that the car was a bit of a garage queen prior to my purchase, so I figured that it was probably likely there'd be a couple of issues once a new owner started playing with the car. So I guess I'm headed back to the mechanic. There's a couple of "30K related" things I wanted Bill to check out anyway. I like Bill and all, but I hope I don't get to know him TOO well! ;)

    Chris
