Yeh, I realize this isn't car related, and with Cavallino & PBSW a centemeter away it's not on your mind.........But, I took off work on Monday in the hopes to get some trees installed in my back yard in order to move closer to finishing my re-landscape project............So, I am curious for opinions on if you think Royal Palms or Coconut Palms would look better in my back yard. I plan to plant 3 trees in a triagular pattern on the outside edge of each side of my back yard (so, total of 6 trees), then landscape around them.

I like the way coconut palms give a tropical look, but they seem like they'll be a PITA maintaining & cleaning the trees. The royal palms also look nice, more of a manicured less tropical look, but are self-cleaning type trees.

    Thoughts????

Do a mix of coconuts and triangle palms. With royals, In a few years all you will see are telephone poles.

Definitely Coconut palms. Christmas palms are also nice and take up less space, although they are kind of messy. I have a friend with a good nursery that could talk to you about them.

We had Royal Palms in front and coconut in the back... which were problematic when they EXPLODED with pollen onto us and into the pool-- so if you've got a pool be weary.

Think scale. Unless you have a very big house, royal palms will make your front look very small.

Make sure that you take there full size into consideration when you plant them.

When the houses in my neighborhood were built, they put 3 palm trees in each front yard and they looked nice.
Now 10 years later, they are tall enough to hit the house and do major damage in the event of a hurricane.
Our normally strict HOA has not forced anyone to replace the ones that came down or died to since they now realize that planting them close to the house or near a road or driveway is a mistake.

Coconut Palms may cause the coconuts to be thrown as projectiles in a hurricane too, but then if you pick the coconuts and make pina coladas before the storm, you wont care what happens.

Now thats the way to think guys!
Turkey palms are nice...but so are ponytail palms. Both must be planted in greater numbers than your thinking but don't really take up much space. Rather sort in height for many years, you night be better off with these, they look nice and they are native to the area...so now worries for freezes.

i'd say it depends on what your trying to achieve.

cocos have a wider spread frond. if you want privacy more so than a view, go with a coco.

if you want a little more formal, more for the tree itself, versus the shade of privacy screen it provides, go with royals.

i have both, but in different applications. hope my post helps.

not true, royals are slow growing and of course it depends on the amount of wood on the tree they install.

Fred, IMO royal palms lend a stately look to any residence; coconut palms are nice, but the nuts become a nuisance and and a danger if they fall on someone's head.
They are also easily affected by a desease that turn them yellow and eventually kill them.

Well, I decided on Royal Palms - Cleaner, safer, less maintenence.......... Drove to Homestead, all picked out, marked, and ready to be delivered today, but yesterday, as I am putting markers in the ground where they will go, my neighbor decided to pitch a fit about me planting trees in MY yard that would block his view of the lake................

Originally, I wanted to surround my property line with Areca palms, which would form a wall of palm branches to give me complete privacy, then landscape inside the Arecas. But, after speaking with my neighbor a few months ago he expressed concern that it would block his view. So, to be a good neighbor, I had the landscaping redesigned without the Arecas, instead just putting in a few palm trees with flowers at the base of each. That way, it would add a touch of landscape, but the trees would be tall and narrow enough that it wouldn't block his view of the lake. However, yesterday he tells me that he will not 'allow' me to plant anything in my yard since it will be in his line of sight - mind you, he has 4 plam trees in his yard already! Long story short, after trying to discuss it politely with him, and asking him if he had any suggestions, he tells me that I am not 'allowed' to block his view with 'anything'. Well, F*ck him........... Now, instead, I'm submitting my original plans today or tomorrow to the Homeowner's archtectural review board - I hope he likes his new view of Areca palms that will completely replace his view of the lake................ :D
