Anyone know why there is a clear plastic fuel hose running from the fuel filler neck to a metal pipe located on the upper firewall? It is about 10 inches long. On the other end of the metal pipe is a regular cloth covered fuel hose connected to the top of the passenger side fuel tank. I assume this is for pressure equilization, but why the clear plastic hose? Seems odd to me.

I searched all over for that hose and ended up finding it at home depot. I sent the extra I had to a few other F-chatters. If you give me until tomorrow I'll poke around and see if I have enough to send you unless you are needing it sooner than that.

As to why I am not sure. My 81 308 had it, if I remember right on both ends of the metal tube that connect the fuel tanks. Maybe it is clear so if fyou have the engine bay open while your refuling you can see one tank is full and the over flow is going into the other tank.
There is another vent line that crosses to the vent collector if you have emmision system.
Then there is a large tube that has hoses on each end that connects the tanks lower, that has a drain in it.

I changed out the fuel and vent lines last year.

This year I am in the process of replacing the coolant lines.

Dont take chances with the fuel hoses!

Cut a 2" section of that clear vinyl hose and throw it in a gas can overnight and make sure it doesnt change at all in that time. Some of that vinyl hose with swell to double its size and then become hard as a brick once it dries out.

    Test it first.

This clear (blue/green) hose is not just any hose it is a fuel hose called Cavis. As to why Ferrarui used it in this location on the 308/328, I can only guess that Stephen in on the right track.

When I replaced my fuel lines I did use Cavis in this location and for the drain hose from the fuel filler.

My reply was regarding the Home Depot hose. This is how it starts.....

I would bet you a VERY good dinner that Cavis hose is not sold at Home Depot

I completely agree with you, there is no way Home Depot sells Cavis hose. But glad to buy you dinner next time you are in Chicago!

Now you guys have me worried. If I have some extra hose from my Home Depot purchase I will throw it some gas and see how it responds. I will also check the line on the car. It has been in for just over a year.

In addition to T.Rutlands, Cavis line is available from Italian Car Parts and I believe Dennis McCann. Checking it in gas is a good idea. This check will not work well with rubber fuel line bacause the inner hose lining is made of a different materiel than the outer surface.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

I guess this is like the discussion of why Ferrari used timing belts instead of chains. Who knows???

I'll stick to the origional and use the cavis fuel line, unless someone can give me a good reason to change.

I checked my " Home Depot " line when I got home and it is as supple as the day I bought it. Not saying it is as good as the cavis hose but no problems so far. I can't find any additional hose in my garage so my next trip to home depot I'll see what brand name, etc.. I could not find it on their website.

If this hose is blocked in some way, would that cause a PIA in refueling? For instance, the nozzle constantly shutting off?

I have found only one gas station ( Chevron ) that allows me to insert the hose correctly without the pump constantly shutting off. All other gas stations I must turn the handle 90 degrees to get a constant flow of fuel. This has been discussed in other threads.

I am not familiar enough with the system to answer your original question but I am sure the more experienced f-chatters will chime in

When I replaced my fuel hoses 2 years ago, just replaced that clear one with the standard cotton jacketed hose as used on most of the other lines. Would be interesting to know why that one hose was clear, it's not like you can see it very well when looking in the engine bay.

Keep an eye on it. That clear line they sell turns hard as a rock in 2 weeks on my brake bleeder bottle with only brake fluid contacting it. I use it for that application but will not fuel venting. Had a carbed 308 in early this week where the cloth braided hose would go soggy wet when the pump was running and the car was cold. The hose would swell up and seal once wet for a little while.

As long as the owners know what to keep an eye open for...

I'm replacing the cavis hose on my 328. I called Italian Car parts and they couldn't tell me what sizes I need. I have the hoses off but there are no markings on them. The sizes listed on Italian car parts web site are 5X9, 10X15 and 16X23. Does anyone know what that means? Italian Car Parts doesn't.

    dean,
you need 16mm i.d.x 11.5" long to replace the cavis hose which runs from the filler neck to the steel
vent line running over to the passenger-side fuel tank.
rather than use cavis hose, you might want to consider the same type hose that you'll be using on the
passenger tank connection, assuming it will be changed.
DO NOT use vinyl hose as dave helms cautions.

fwiw, you might search "328 fuel hose pm" of 2/11/08 @3:17pm.
you'll find sizes and hose types w/sources for a complete fuel hose change-out.

Thanks Bill. Do you know if the 16mm hose is 5X9, 10X15 or 16X23? I guessed 10x15 and ordered that. If I'm wrong its a $8.75 mistake. I can live with that.

Thanks. I didn't understand the numbering of the tubing. Now I get it. I'll see if I can change my order.
