So I'm finally doing it, cleaning out my closet of all my '90's & early 2000's suits and sport coats. I simply can't stuff anymore in there and I need the room, plus I won't wear any of these anymore. Nice stuff and still fits but old style and I'm bored.

I wish I had a nephew or a relative I could gift them to but I doubt they would wear them either.

The intention is to drop them off at Goodwill but damn, this stuff was high dollar items at one time Is there a better idea, what have you guys done? It's about 40 suits & sport jackets and about 50 shirts all designer labels.

Seems a shame but maybe some good can come to someone.

    Craigslist?

I would probably Goodwill it to get rid of it faster...and tax deduction.

Yea that's just it... I want it all gone at once. But I also like the idea of someone who lets say is just starting out business and needs some nice clothes... I'm not talking big lapels and bell bottoms here, just old to me. And I really don't wear suits and blazers too much anymore

I think I may do CL as one lot, if no go, then off to Goodwill. I'm just curious what others have done.

We have a charity here in town - unfortunately cannot recall the name - that
SPECIALIZES in offering low cost or free dress clothes folks trying to get jobs.

Maybe google around for your area or call the local Chamber of Commerce - I'm
sure there's an organization like that somewhere near you - and it's a GREAT way
to dispose of those quality clothes - some low-income recipient will be tickled pink to get them
    for that "big interview"

list them as all together, they are likely same size, so a single buyer isn't a problem

i did same locally on kijiji, listed several dress clothes (sports coats, wool slacks, etc) to sell off, and sold them in one batch
the thing i did was write up what retail / i paid for them, and what selling price (all in) ...showing the huge savings
try it and see what kind of results you get, it's free and you don't 'have' to sell unless you want to

I would guess there's about 30,000.00 in clothes here that I would sell for about 500.00

I would hate to see someone buy them, then sell them one at a time on eBay.

I'd like to see people benefit from them, for free. I'm going to go with Jedi's suggestion and try to find a church or charity that will give them to potential interview bound hopefuls. I would think wearing a 1200 Giorgio Armani suit would do wonders for their confidence and land that job!

    Thanks guys.

I really do hope you can go that route - imagine the smiles you'd put on faces
at a charity that specializes in dressing poor folks for interviews/jobs. That's worth
more than $500 in more ways than you can imagine.

I have participated in a few runs to benefit Back on My Feet Chicago. They seem like a great organization. They use running as a way to help people who are homeless and/or addicts get their lives in order. I don't know if dress clothes would be of help to their members, but it might be worth a shot since they are local and don't resell clothes like Goodwill etc... Here is the link to the Chicago group http://chicago.backonmyfeet.org/chicago-landing.html
Obviously, do your own research to see if you agree with their philosophy. My only experiences with them are through races that raise funds for their cause.

I'll do that. I only have one other place I can think of but there's enough here to give to both or all to one if the other is not interested. I travel into the city once a week so dropping off is no problem.

Thank you for the lead. I'm still sorting, 5 hours in today so far.

    JAM1 -

Most are 42R, and the pants are 34x32 and the shirts are 15-16 34/35. So I would imagine this will work for many men in need

Just my size! PM me if you want to sell the whole lot at once- I am usually buying vintage stuff like this on Ebay and would jump at the chance to buy a lot of nice stuff at one time, from a 'trusted supplier'.

I assume that you know that donations will net you almost no tax deduction, since the deduction is based on the value of the used clothing (generally, the expected sales proceeds). If Goodwill gets $50 for a used Armani suit in perfect condition, that's your write-off.

My wife sends her used designer stuff (much of which is actually still new with tags) to a place called "Good Byes" in San Francisco (http://www.goodbyessf.com/). Stuff I paid $2,000 for usually nets $100-$150, more when the tags are still attached. The results are a little strange. A $3,000 Escada dress won't sell for $150, but a $300 D&G denim skirt will sell for $80. The store donates unsold items after three months, but you can pay to have them sent back to you if want to donate them somewhere else. They sell mens clothing, too.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but giving them away will net me so much more than selling them. I had a nice chat with a gentleman that runs a charity called MELD. The 4 big boxes of suits, jackets, shirts and pants will go to help men properly dress for job interviews and maybe turn their lives around. Yes, they may be dressed better than the interviewer, but if just makes them feel better wearing them, that's enough of an roi for me.

Heck, to a guy who is unloading $30k worth of excess clothing I probably DO look like a charity case. But props to you for helping the less fortunate get back on their feet!

That is a great thing you are doing. I will always give a second look to someone that cares enough to wear a suit to an interview even with a spotty work history. It shows a respect for me as the interviewer and the position as well. Good for you!
