My 86 328 was unable to hold idle when warm. Larry Fletcher rebuilt the WUR, and the issue is completely resolved. One more thanks to him...

Without a doubt! He's been a great help with both advice, rebuilds and other hardware over the 20+ years I've had my 308.

He might be the ONLY one left ;) -- I know that some other advertisers of CIS rebuilding services actually just send the parts to Larry F..

The physical act of rebuilding them (WURs & FDs) isn't really hard ONCE you obtain all the necessary parts (Good Luck). I've done it.

Getting them absolutely spotless at the microscopic level that is required is an exercise in patience few would endure. One very tiny speck of rust or varnish (dried gas) will throw either of these parts into a tizzy.

BUT, it is the magic employed after the fact to bring it into spec, that is truly the hard part and the piece of the pie I couldn't hope to do. That is where, IMHO, Larry earns every cent he charges.

+1 -- the investment in the tooling/equipment/skill to calibrate is a huge barrier, and one of the primary reasons why EFI replaced (mechanical) CIS -- no analog mechanical tweaks in EFI.

When Bosch is sending the work to him, that's when you know it's being done right!

WUR - as best I can represent it, is a device that controls the idle fuel pressure based on the time it takes for the 12V signal to the bi-metallic strip inside to push a plunger and, downstream, alter the pressure coming out of the FD. It also will soak up heat from the engine itself, so the bi-metallic strip/plunger is already in "warm" position if the car is starting warm.

That explanation may be inaccurate in some specifics, but covers the basic function.

It's possible that the wur is responsible (or partially responsible) for an idling problem I've had. Is there any easy way to test how well it's functioning like I've read about for the AAV (sticking it in an oven and freezer and observing what it does) or is a pressure tester and more complicated procedures required?

I don't have a pressure tester, so had to use a process of elimination. If your car idles smoothly when cold, but won't idle smoothly when warm, the WUR could be stuck in the cold setting. That seems to have been my situation.

Does a Euro (Aussie, actually) 308 have a WUR?
I've got this damnable hot idle problem that's (a) intermittent, and (b) very embarrassing at a set of lights as I roll to a stop and the engine dies.

    Thanks

    Patrick
