The worst movie about Enzo has to be Ron Howard's Rush. First it completely ignored Enzo's relationship with the team and Lauda at the time. Second it shows him sitting on the side of the track reading a newspaper completely uninterested in what's going on. It shows nothing about Enzo (good or bad) after the accident -- as if he didn't exist. Most disappointing -- and I wonder it was intentional to raise Lauda and diminish Enzo.
I guess Rush was about the drivers and nothing else. A bigger than life character like Enzo Ferrari would distract too much attention from the main theme of the film. The newspaper scene was to show that Ferrari paid too much attention to what the journalist said. A quite primitive screenwritter trick, IMO, but again, this movie was about Hunt and Lauda so there was not much time to talk about Ferrari. Personally, more than Enzo Ferrari I missed Mauro Forghieri at the Ferrari pits. Even if he had not a big role in the screenplay, his presence was an important asset in the Formula 1 scenery back then. After all that work reproducing the cars, the team appareil, etc... they put a non-descript Ferrari mechanic!
I think Mann is probably the best suited director for a movie about Ferrari. We could argue about his filmmaking skills; I like some of his flicks, while others are pretentious and thick as a brick. But he's really interested in cars and he's a long time Ferrari lover and owner, so at least he's going to take it seriously and talk in the same language than us.
How about Paul Sorvino as Enzo? Not "boffo BO" but a fine actor who could do an authentic Enzo. But the writing and directing are more important, just as dreamcarswest says.
Back when Adolfo Celi played the Enzo-like character in "Grand Prix", having him play Enzo in a biopic at that time would have been perfect casting. I seriously doubt, though, that Enzo would have permitted it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think that DeNiro would be perfect. Did any of you saw the movie "American Hustle"? In it, DeNiro plays a gangster named Victor Telligio and he really looks like Mr.Ferrari.
Yates's book certainly is not considered the most scholarly authority on the life of Enzo Ferrari. Richard Williams's work is generally considered superior. I would rather see a well done documentary along the lines of "Senna" than a dramatization like the two that are apparently in the works.
Actually Enzo loved that Celi was playing him. when Frankenhimer shut down production and went to Maranello so show Enzo what he was doing - after Enzo saw the un edited footage, - he said you can have it all. factory , cars etc... so then when they wrote the Manetti part - it was a veiled Enzo ...he was very happy with it. and loved the stardom.
I am thankful we will have 2 great Ferrari focused movies to look forward to! Actors and directors aside....
Seems like Noomi Rappace (swedish version of The girl with the dragon tattoo) is casted for the role as Enzo's wife
+1 for a well done documentary like "Senna," which told his dramatic story very well. IMO, "Rush" did not do justice to Lauda vs Hunt, although it was probably more entertaining for a general audience that may not have known who the hell Lauda and Hunt were in the first place.
That was Rooney Mara. Noomi Rapace starred in Prometheus. P.S. You are right, Noomi played that charcter as well...
