I have a Blaupunkt Lexington SQR 45 currently installed in my car. I recently bought an Alpine 7180 on ebay and can't decide whether I should switch them. ( Both are in perfect working condition ) I read about Alpine and Blaupunkt were both factory options in different countries.

Since I don't have a block-off plate when installing the blaupunkt, and took quite a while pushing the unit past the surrounding excess leather trim, I want to be sure that I want to switch into the Alpine.

The background light on the Blaupunkt is orange while the Alpine, as you all know, has green lighting which matches with the speedo.

    Suggestions please !

Just about every Ferrari 308 I saw back in the day had a Blaupunkt. So many, that I put one in my 308.

Alpine used to advertise a great deal with Lambo so I have always associated Alpine with them.

I say stay with the Blaupunkt

+2 from an expert in the business I don't think there is any functional benefit in changing to the alpine.... If you ever want to go back to stock I have the stock cover for the dash as I saved some from the 80's. it appears your steering wheel is on the wrong side? Scott

I have a fancy Sony, to hi tech for the car.
I would love to have a low tech old school Blaupunkt from the 80's.

Blaupunkt and 308s go together. There's a Blaupunkt CR-4096 in my 1976 GTB and a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 (very similar to yours) in my 944 turbo. I like them both a lot.

    Keep your Lexington, wowow.

    Douglas,

I don't have a picture of my 944 turbo's interior, but here's what the Reno looks like. I'll take a picture of mine and post it tomorrow.

By the way, your Lexington was an upgrade with four power amplifiers for US 944s with the M490 10 speaker option.

Yes, My lexington was bought from someone who took it out from his 944. I also have the BEA 80 equalizer and the mounting bracket that came with it. Currently I have a Montreal SQR 48 in my 964. I found it brand new in a small shop a few yrs ago. It has white light rather than yellow light in the Lexington and that matches with the 964 white light pretty well. I bought a Symphony to be used in my project 930 Supersport..... which might take months to finish....

    Nice units!

The BEA 80 equalizer was mounted beneath the Lexington in the cubby hole slot in the 944.

Sound-wise, my guess is that the Alpine will sound better because I've never been impressed with the sound of any Blaupunkt. That being said, I never listen to the radio in a Ferrari and Blaupunkt makes radios that are very attractive and are more period correct, so that seems to be the way to go. That Koln SQR 22 head unit pictured in is a work of art -- absolutely beautiful.

Looks nice and elegant - without all those silly-ass lights, multiple menus etc that we seem to be stuck with nowadays - I like it.

Oh...reading on the site it appears that it has no internal amp so a separate power amp would be needed. I would not be interested in adding a power amp to my 328, despite the fact that it certainly would potentially have much better sound.

I once looked into it, but I believe it was too big to fit.

+1 that's the only downside about it.
It requires ext. Amp but it's pretty though:)
