Went to go remove my PB Engineering lights to replace them with my new Morimotos. I already had a buyer lined up for my old lights so I was ready to ship them as soon as they were out. To my surprise, they had bubbles in the chrome finish under the lens! Three of the four were bad. I swear they looked perfect just last week and now they’re not salable.

I’ve fired off an email to Byron to see about getting them replaced under warranty. I’ll report back on the process.

Also, I’m pretty confident this happened due to heat in the engine bay. I drive my car weekly so some of you may not be that far behind me. If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend putting some extra heat protection between your lights and the engine bay if you plan on keeping these.

Curious to see if there are any support for these lights. I hope they make it right.

Are the areas we can't see even worse? Visible area should be the least hot I'd think

Oddly enough, that spot on top of the light was the worst. Maybe sunlight contributing? The others were off to the side though.

I shot an email out to Byron on Thursday night. No response yet but we’ll see. I may try to reach him through one of the eBay vendors if he doesn’t respond.

I don’t think so. Looking at the morimoto construction the inside is a painted silver in a two part housing similar to OEM. The PB lights are a single housing (much cleaner with no seam) but they went with a reflective insert in the body. That reflective layer is what’s bubbling likely because it’s some type of film that was adhered versus a painted finish.

After you do the repair of your choice, I recommend wrapping the backside or repair area on the taillight with adhesive aluminized reflective insulation wrapping heat barrier and lining the underside of the small rear engine compartment panels with the same adhesive heat barrier. The temp drop was over a hundred degrees different at the tail light All the header heat goes up by the tail lights and out around them. Heat weakens the epoxy and plastic. I think this was an additional contributing factor in the failure mode of these lights. FWIW. This was suggested by Scuding Swiss after a my LED tail light burned out in a matter of months, Using a IR thermometer I ran a test before and after placing the insulation and the temp drop was remarkable and palpably much cooler.

Standard. I put the adhesive insulation on the side panels and underside of the lights fashioning a small barrier as best I could but the temp drop was remarkable

Thanks for the tips. I just bought some aluminum heat shielding and will try making something a bit more robust behind these.

Haven't received a response from Byron as of yet. I fired off another email to him and also contacted one of the eBay sellers. I don't think I'll have much traction from them though. It was odd because one of the eBay sellers listing these is called "R Engineering." but from Byron's posts here, it's evident the logo is PB Engineering. Tossing that up to China being China. Not sure what everyone else had in their paypal sale, but Byron specifically spelled out a one year warranty for me. I have until July 7th to make some type of claim through paypal apparently.

I'd start the paypal claim if I was you. You can always stop it.

I sent the second email today while it was the middle of the night in China. I’ll give him at least a full day. The eBay seller asked if I bought the lights from him and said nothing after I said “no.” The eBay ad does mention f chat though so maybe it was the original group buy contact

Going to check mine now, If there is an issue I will be putting in a Paypal claim straight away, as you have not heard anything, car has only done 60 miles since fitting them!

I am wondering if these are fit for purpose now for the longer term!

I’ve put maybe 500-600 miles so far since I’ve had them. I’m not sure but I think what did them in was a particularly bad bout of traffic I was in where I was going almost nowhere for 30min. I washed the car the week before that and the bubbling definitely wasn’t there.

Quick update. The eBay reseller reached out to Byron for me and I was finally able to get in touch with him. He said my emails ended up in spam.
Either way, they have arranged for me to ship my lights to the eBay seller in the US and they will be shipping me a new set in return.
