Has anyone on here ever cheated on LCT or duty? If so, were you found out? If so, then what happened? Please discuss. No, I haven't. I'm a big chicken. I've heard stories though.
Hmm, thinking about this I can't remember whether it was LCT or import duty I got shafted on ? Keating bought in the (?) 120% import duty back in 1990 ? and made it retrospective from memory ? I'd done the paperwork in Australia House in London to ship my 7 series BMW home with the usual % discounts for the amount of time away from Oz and was only liable for circa 7-8K duty. Got back to Oz, car arrives some months later and Customs House in Circular Quay tell me I owe them near on $180K to get the car , plus I had to hand over $2,500 to the thugs wharfies to get the car off the boat and then $750 to the bonded yard Nazis to get the car cleaned because it had been in the UK and mad cow was rife then. So upon being told the "good" news re the $180k I threw the keys to the customs guy and said "fuch it, it's your car now, your problem" Girlfriend at the time couldn't believe I was ready to walk away without the car As I reach the door the customs guy says "Hold it, there must be some way we can come to an agreement, we don't want the car" I told him the only way I will accept anything is if the goverment agrees to the original documentation ..... and this is the part I could never see happening in Oz, ... the customs guy agreed to the original agreement No arguing, no argy bargy, just signed the paperwork and handed me the car .... after handing over the money for the wharfies and bonded yard people .... who NEVER cleaned the car (it never even moved from the spot I saw it in the yard !) The whole system was corrupt back then as far as I was concerned, so it must have been before LCT, so NO, I've never cheated
I used to bring in 40 foot containers from the UK and France regularly JM...Full of antiques and decorative arts...The amount of stuff that was stolen on every container check was disgraceful....It was like dealing with Ali Barber and his 40 thieves on every shipment....Our import process is a total joke...Jobs for the boys....
A mate had that happen to him in the eighties. All the locks and seals were undisturbed - they'd cut the back of the container open and then welded it shut again. I suggested that he open a cylinder of acetylene in the container before he locked it next time.
I’ve only ever brought in one full container where I’ve actually had the container delivered to the warehouse (contained vintage timber furniture from Macau) and it arrived still totally sealed with big warning notices regarding opening it in open spaces (it was fumigated before it left Macau) and when we did crack the seal the fumes nearly knocked me out...
Because I bought in so many Karen there were containers that were “spot checked” and opened when we weren’t there...That’s when things disappeared..
When i bought the 550, i filled out transfer forms knowing that stamp duty notice would arrive just in time for my birthday. It was almost as good as buying the car itself..... the stamp duty assesment was for the sum of $18.75, so i called them up to say they had made a mistake.... no of course i paid the $18.75. Guess what i got for my birthday ? a personalized phone call, asking how much did you pay for that car ???? they had left off a few zeros
Speaking of duties and taxes.... The cannonball F40 was brought up in the F40 section. Does anyone know where it went?
No. History of the Sydney car is known, and its not the Cannonball car. The F40 for sale in Sydney has the correct numbers/ engine/ build numbers etc. The dodgy "clone" was the blue F40 for sale in the UK. Most likely the remains of the Cannonball car were exported back to Japan to satisfy the Carnet requirements. But no one has come up with a VIN for the Cannonball F40 yet so it's eventual disposition remains a mystery ( rebuilt, sold for parts ?)
