Used (or new). Flappy paddle = automatic-manual NOT manual-automatic. Must be RWD, not AWD or FWD. No GTIs or TTs!

BMW Z4 3.0i with SMG (not sure if you could get it with the 2.5i in the US)
    BMW 330ci SMG
    BMW E46 M3 SMG

Hmm ... can't think of any other ones right now. But obviously I have a BMW fixation :D

    Isn't the 335i a slushbox? Not a true single- or dual-clutched transmission?

And if the 335i will do for the OP, then why not a 135i. Cheaper, same drivetrain, etc.

The 135i/335i still has a slushbox. The DCT will be coming to those models pretty soon though (from what I've read).

I drive a 2008 GTI with the DST transmission and don't think I'm going to buy a double-clutch transmission again.

Not really "paddle", but it's automatic and has the buttons on the wheel - used Lexus GS400 / 430. Could probably get an early model ('98) for under $10K.

Automatic manuals use a traditional clutch (sometimes two in the case of DSG) and hydraulics to move through the gears.

Manual automatics (like the G8 I'm driving this week) allow the driver to override the computer's control over a traditional automatic transmission.

Damn .. how could I forget that one!? I owned one for a year. Definitely the cheapest way to get into a RWD flappy-paddle gearbox. Just go ahead and spend the 20 euros on the aftermarket ESP-Off Switch -- It's worth it :D I assure you, you'll never get weirder looks than when you go around a corner sideways in a smart car :D (When it's wet)

Nope ... not a huge fan of it anymore. But it took 6 months to grow tired of it, so it's not something I saw coming. It doesn't matter, because I'm getting a track car to cover the "driving enjoyment" anyways :D

Interesting, as my younger brother is debating on whether to get DSG or just get the manual 'box. We have heard people say that they get tired of it. How does it work as automatic? Very harsh gear changes or is it smooth? Smoothness in rush traffic?

    Thanks.

It's actually a pity that you ruled out AWD, otherwise I'd suggest the Evo X SST (called the MR version in your neck of the woods, though it's not a "true" MR). Out of the box, it behaves very much like a RWD in the corners.

It works perfectly fine, but I just got back form Europe and all I was driving for three weeks was either a Lexus LS600h or a new XKR ... so I didn't like my GTI that much anymore. :)
The only thing that annoys me is that, when not in Sport mode, the transmission shifts way too early. You'll be in 4th before you hit 30 - and when you do want to step on it a little more, it takes forever. Also the abrupt "jump" when I start from a complete standstill increasingly pisses me off.
Sorry to have high-jacked your thread.

If I had to choose a fun car with a "flappy-paddle" gearbox, then I'd probably go with a Z4 3.0i with the SMG. It's a riot to drive and would have been my choice if I didn't have to lug all my camera gear around me all the time.

    Hope to have helped you.

Only early z4 roadsters had SMGs, right? No coupes, no Ms.

Well, I have a 2009GTI with the flappy paddles.

I thought I'd try the paddles since that seems to be the direction the world is going and there are enough reasons for me to be considered a Luddite in general, and automotively in particular.

I really like the car but wish I'd gotten a proper 6 speed. Live and learn. I'll never get any flappy car again.
