550 Maranello 2000. I will be importing. Personal car not dealer. Should I change the speedometer for a miles per from km per hour and how do I document the change over mileage. Past federalism date when it is shipped next year.

    Thanks for guidance.

I know nothing of the technicalities involved with changing one on a 550 but unless there is a major obstacle of some sort I would recommend it, yes, as otherwise you will quickly get tired of converting kph to mph as you drive it in the US. I am sure more tech savvy people will comment.

I did the reverse thirty years ago in 1993 when I brought a Porsche 924 turbo from Florida to ship to Europe, drive it one summer, including going to Spa, the Nurburgring, Le Mans, and then sell it in Brussels: miles to kilometers.

Get legal proof of the mileage just before you change the gauge, i.e. ask a notary public or police to note the mileage and produce a legal document stating that on day X the mileage was X. Ideally they would come to the workshop where it is about to be done, then your mechanic proceeds with the change. I was renting a pro mailbox in Florida from a lady who was a notary public so she did it for me. Take photos showing the mileage taken when the gauges are swapped. Obviously you set the new gauge to the exact mileage the old gauge showed in kms, converted to miles. Then the garage invoice must not only state the job done but also the kilometer mileage on the gauge they removed and that they set the new gauge in miles at the equivalent The more you document the whole process the better.

The funny thing is just after I changed to a kilometer gauge before I shipped the car to Europe I went to a restaurant somewhere in south Florida and the very clueless very young valet parker said "Sir, your car goes 300PMH?! Wow!":D

I have imported at least 10 Ferrari's over the last couple of years (all for resale) - all over 25 years old - AND never convert the odometer/speedometer to MPH! From a dealer perspective, I don't want there to be any question on actual mileage on the car (and yes, I am aware that odometers can be disconnected, speedo's can be changed and documented), but why create more uncertainty when you can just keep in KPH as there is no DOT rules stating you have to change it? Incidentally, just picked up a very unique spec 550 Maranello at port today!
