When I first got my Z06 back in the day, I read all the forums, on how to maintain, common issues, etc. like I do with all my cars, and one of the things that stood out to me was how you "had" to keep the car level to "properly" perform an oil change and get out all of the old oil. People were putting their cars on ramps then jacking up the rear (dangerous as you now essentially put the car in neutral as you're jacking around in back of the car, not to mention a PITA) For the couple years I was taking the car in and paying upwards of $150 for an oil change on a lift, until I tried an experiment and did it one year on my rhino ramps like I have been doing since I was a teenager. Well, the oil that was "left" in the car was less than .5 qt (out of 7)....and full synthetic oil typically had less than 3000 miles on it (much less sometimes), and didn't so much as discolor the newer oil. No reason to pay anyone 100+ and several hours for an oil change that I can do myself in an hour or so with better oil/filter for around 40.

With the Ferrari, the oil change portion of the annual I believe was around 400 or so. It would probably be about 100 to do myself, and as of right now (might get quick jack down the road), it would be on ramps. I believe there are 2 drain points and the oil in there now probably only has around 2000 miles on it...so what would be the harm in just driving up the rhino ramps and draining the oil and doing an oil change like we've been doing since bible times? Would there really be that much oil left in the pan to make any difference whatsoever?

I’m no expert but given how your car has a dry sump (Z06 doesn’t), I’d venture to guess you’ll be alright. Let’s see what the experts say.

You would still need to remove the rear under tray. The oil system has 11.5 quarts. You can measure the amount you drain and that will determine what's left

you are overthinking it. many cars today have oil cooler, and some of the old oil do not drain out because of it. just change the oil more often if you are worried about it. in 99% of Ferrari, that wouldn't even be an issue. as they don't get drive that much, and is changed due to time, not mileage.

It wouldn't bother me at all not getting every bit out. But I will say the nice thing about the quickjack is that you can fit a 5 gallon pail under it so you don't get any splash back when you pull the plug.

I believe the newer Z06's went to a dry sump system, but you are right, mine (C5) does not.
Actually a 360, always use ramps to remove and install the undertray. Probably the worst part of doing anything under the car.
Exactly my point, the little bit of left over oil has almost no trauma since most Ferraris (including mine) are driven 2-3k a year, if that, and that oil is engineered to go much, much further.
Yeah, I'll snag one up one of these days, I'm sure it makes life much easier..

Thanks all, my next oil change will be performed at Casa de Redneck and the $$ saved will go towards cheap beer.

If its only 1/2 quart left and you want to get it all out, then do the normal drain on jacks, slide out the tall oil drain container, slide under thin flat trays, lower the car and let final drain for as long as you like. Then jack back up, replace the plugs and washers. Result should be the same as using a level lift and no dangerous balancing act just a second lift from the same point.

I've been changing my oil on ramps every year for the last 8. No problems, no issues, etc. Get as much as you can out and go with it. Runs perfectly fine.

Pan will come off and you can then slide it forward. Will probably try to change oil with the pan on if its possible this weekend.

    I am a redneck... :)

I do mine with the 2 piece 10" race ramps under the rear wheels for a 360. A floor jack and I do it in steps. The 12" 2 piece probably better but the 10 works.

FYI there is a very big cross over pipe between the cooler and sump (IIRC) that can't be undone without very special tools so the procedure is to blow that out with shop air to get the last 1/2+ quart out. It's very rewarding work if you get off on that kind of stuff and dont rush. Black Friday sale at raceramps.com!!!!!

Has anyone tried to use one of those oil change pumps to draw the oil out? At least for a mid season change (since you’d be skipping the filter).

I use one on my Audi, works fabulously. A guy on YT used one and then removed the oil pan after to show that it removed about as much oil as you would through the drain plug,

Those pumps work well with wet sump systems. The Ferraris have dry sumps/

Changing oil on ramps is no big deal. Wrestling with under tray is a PIA.
