After some recent personal research and enlightenment on the car, I realized it is time we form an official thread on what is my favorite Porsche: the incredible, important, and timeless Carrera GT.

This is a car that commands the respect of all enthusiasts and presents itself under no false pretenses. Combining a naturally-aspirated, high-revving and race derived V10 power unit with a 6-speed manual transmission, it is simple and focused, raw and unfiltered.

I think that as time goes on, this car's following will only grow, and hopefully this thread will serve to spread information both previously told and untold on this amazing car!

Carrera GT assembly at Leipzig. Note that the V10 engines were assembled in Stuttgart and sent in for mating with the cars. It could be argued that Cayenne production and sales (seen in the background) is what allowed Porsche to fund such an ambitious supercar project. Unlike their previous supercar, the 959, the Carrera GT (Type 980) was a completely new platform from the ground up. A Porsche like this had never been seen before, and I would argue will never be seen again...

Carbon fiber monocoque and underbody tray. The engine and transmission mounting assembly was also completely formed from carbon fiber, which Porsche patented before the car's debut (most carbon fiber monocoque supercars use lightweight alloy metals for their engine support structure). The result was a full carbon fiber chassis that weighed only 220 pounds.

Part of the carbon fiber support structure for the engine & transmission can be seen in this cutaway. Also note the inboard suspension based on the Porsche GT1's design (Le Mans winning in 1998). A beautiful car inside & out!

Profile cutaway showing the engine & transmission location in relation to the car's chassis. The transmission (connected to the revolutionary & compact ceramic composite clutch) was mounted sideways to allow a better rear diffuser shape, thus allowing more rear downforce. The Carrera GT produces downforce in a 30% front / 70% rear balance, and at top speed makes around 882 pounds of downforce on the rear axle!

A stunning trip around the Nurburgring in a Carrera GT. Turn up the volume!

Bonus oversteer moment at 9:23, proof that these cars can be controlled quite nicely at the limit...

    The long way home
It might be slightly more expensive to do so, but it's never too late to remedy... :)

Wise choice! It's nice to see the owners that hang on to them rather than trade back & forth.

Agreed! The Porsche market as a whole is a great buyer's market at the moment, CGT is included within that IMO.

And in the end, in terms of speed I dont think the Enzo was any faster. I too love my CGT.

Probably not! Comparisons of speed become largely irrelevant as time goes on. It's about the way the car makes the driver feel, point blank!

    Exactly.

Meanwhile if you ever decide to do a publication on these note that Getty has quite an archive on the production of them.
