Has anyone had any luck with re-dying their 348 carpet? My 90TS beige carpet is very faded and it's almost yellow in color. I looked around on the old Interwebz to see what people are doing. I already knew spray dye was a bad idea, but then I found Rit mentioned over and over. I've used it before in my youth with 80's tie-dye tee-shirts as well as dying lacrosse stick heads for years even into college.

I gave Rit a try on a piece of cotton and it looked close and so I then gave it a try on a random piece of carpet that was sitting behind the armrest. It had a clear fade line down it, but after sitting in a small pickle jar of water and dye mix for a few hours, it came out pretty close to the original color. I'm thinking about doing the rest of the carpet in the next few weeks.

    Any constructive criticism?

That looks very good to me but my 355 carpet looks more like your faded stuff and its not faded. Maybe mine is just a diff color.

That's a good match. It's trashed anyway faded right? Go for it but back off the time a little. It looks a little darker than the good spots.

The shade is done by adding more or less water, so I'll need to get the percentage down before the rest of the carpet. I'm going to have a get a big tub to soak it all in, so I'll test with fabric before attempting the carpet. I'll have to make enough of it so that I can soak each piece in the same bath.

I tried to use a spray bottle and it didn't work, so it's the soak method.

I'm slowly mixing the dye and water together in a big tub to get it close to the factory color.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the passenger side carpet, but it looks like something or someone died in the car...

Are you opposed to new carpet? If not you can purchase complete carpet kit for your car from World Carpet & Interior in So. California. I purchased a set and it looks great and gives it that new car smell and appearance. FYI if you remove the Mad Mouse Seatbelt system and install the Three point seatbelts then you are going to want the carpet kit, otherwise the carpet comes up short at the area where the old seatbelts where at.

    Just a thought.

I'm not opposed to replacing the carpet at all. And it's really only 13 pieces of flatish carpet too.

However, if $5 worth of dye brings the color back close to original, it's worth it to me to try.

Mine were tan and the stock set was pretty stained. Got a whole new interior carpet for about a grand installed.

Well, for $5 it was worth it. The carpet isn't perfect as the color isn't uniform all throughout, but it's not yellow anymore.

I'll probably end up replacing the carpet next year when I pull the mouse belts out completely. For my car, the carpet is a bunch of individual flat pieces cut and glued down.

It's actually a lot better than it was, but yeah, I'll replace them in the future.

Why not just source some nice quality auto grade carpeting and get out the scissors ?

On the 355 carpets there are plenty of corners that are molded.....as such I replaced my carpets with OEM.
But on the 348.....looking at the posted pics .....you are right.....just cut and fit.

For $5 it was worth dying the carpet. It looks a lot better than it did.

That being said, I will be replacing the carpet in the future. I plan on removing the mouse belts, and to do so, th e carpet needs to be replaced. I'll remove the mouse belts after I get all of the pieces together for a conversion to the 1989 style shoulder location.

I am in Finksburg and have a 355, and would love to see your car one day. I think it is in May that Radcliffe motor cars in Reisterstown Md. has an all Italian car show, really cool and the owner Richard is really a great guy.
