Although known mainly for his association with Alfa Romeo, it was Italian engineer Carlo Chiti who was primarily responsible for the "modernization" of Ferrari -- breaking with previous "dictums" of Il Commendatore. Such changes included the mid-engine configuration and modern disc brakes. His ideas as Ferrari's chief racing engineer culminated in the 156 Sharknose cars, in which Phil Hill won the 1961 Championship. Equally newsworthy was his subsequent leaving with Hill and disaffected others following a row with Enzo and Laura Ferrari.
While Enzo Ferrari was a great man, he stubbornly held on to some antiquated notions. It was men like Chiti who literally changesd the mindset of Ferrari engineering allowing them to become much more progressive and stay competitive.
Despite the "Palace Coup", Chiti is one of the brightest stars in Ferraris galaxy.
