Has anybody ever had any CF repaired? Had an unavoidable run-in with a price of metal on the glorious SoCal freeways last night. The PPF did its job well, but there’s some damage to the coating as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Only thing that can be done is to sand down and re-clear. Job for a body shop.

Don’t think so. Sounds like another attempt of trying to be the funniest guy in to room, and failing.

Not that it helps you but I know ferrari of Houston does carbon fiber repair. Maybe check with your local dealer.

If they do, they will probably just sub contract it out to their body shop.

Like the above said. It looks to just be damage to the coat and not to the fiber itself. I've repaired this kind of damage a few times myself with great results or you can contact a good bike shop that deals with carbon fiber frame repairs.

A simple solution would be to remove any loose chips, mask off the area and use some spray clear polyurethane gloss ( I have used Min-wax spray gloss) in several coats to build up the finish. Let dry between coats than once it has gas-out for several weeks rub it down even with 2000 wet sandpaper and buff it out with a foam wheel. Get something UV resistant though.

Yeah, I was looking into repair options and saw a bunch of diy videos. I’ll have my guy look it over for any real damage under the car, etc, and see what needs to be done.

So I purchased my Pista from Ferrari of Houston. Previous owner scraped the rear diffuser fin a tiny bit. They told me they are certified to repair carbon fiber by Ferrari. I would have never known my diffuser was ever repaired.

My dealer says they have a guy. He’s pricey, but good.

I have multiple bikes (TT, Aero and Endurance) and not a single high end shop will touch the carbon fiber. Trek, Specialized and Factor dealers will all send a frame back to the manufacturer to X-ray and confirm if there is any damage, and if so they will not repair it but will replace the frame. I’ve had small cosmetic damage to a frame and no dealer would touch it and just told me to ignore it or use clear coat to cover it up and protect it. Maybe other people have different experiences.

Maybe more rare than I thought or I'm just lucky to have a guy locally, but also know frame doctor does it too..... and also a lot of car stuff now too. Call around.

    Or just do it yourself.

You'll have to remove the PPF. Since it doesn't appear the damage reaches into the fiber you can wet sand the area with increasingly find grits of sandpaper and blend it so the damage will effectively disappear. If you finish with a 2000 grit paper (wet sand) and then gently buff it with a polishing compound it will result in a nice gloss that will look like new. My composites business finishes thousands of parts annually to a high standard and we use this approach with success every day. I don't know of anyone who does this type of work in my area (southeast) but I imagine a high-end auto paint shop may have some experience doing this type of work since cosmetic carbon fiber is so prevalent on modern high-end sports cars.
