    Hi.

Has anybody had any experience with the RAC trackstar GPS tracking device ?
I have a F355 and have just had the insurance renewel qoute through for £1400 which was more or less the same as last year. I have found another 2 companies who have qouted around £800 for the same cover (slightly bigger excess). The qoutes are subject to a GPS Tracker being fitted (Tracker Horizon, Monitor, RAC trackstar etc).

I have a Tracker Retrieve currently which is an older system where I have to notify them of the theft. With the savings on the qoute it will pay for itself but just wondered if anybody has any experience of them ?

I am looking more at the RAC Trackstar as it is £200 cheaper than the tracker GPS version and I may not keep the car very long.

    Many Thanks

    Tony

    Hi Tony,
give LiverpoolVictoria a call re insurance. I'd be amazed if they couldn't beat your current quote. They don't require a tracking device to be fitted at all. I have the system you have too and pay around £650 . LV state they won't insure LHD or modified cars but we know for a fact they do;)

Tony, although I've not had experience with Trackstar personally, I realy rate the GPS systems.

Only this week my 360 was collected for servicing and within 10 minutes of the loader setting off, I got a call to validate the movement. The car's been return this morning. I know as I've received another call checking the movement.

This is with Trakbak. The same good news with Tracker.

I would, worth the peace of mind.

Thanks a lot for the info guys.

I will try Liverpool Victoria and see what they come up with.

    I will let you know.

Also good to hear the GPS systems are good.

My Siemens Trakbak worked this morning! Car needed a new battery and on the way to the dealer it seems the power to the system dropped too low

Saw a programme a while ago where they used a Tracker to locate a vehicle, think it was a Land Rover, to an exact crate at Felixstowe docks just before the crims shipped it, and some other decent cars, out the country.

    Well worth the money

I've got Tracker 24hr Monitor. Twice when the car has been flat bedded I've been rung up within 5 minutes with an alert. Its nice to know they are prompt and can get the police notified before the white cliffs loom in the distance

I have the RAC unit. Initially I had some problems with false alarms (virtually every other time I started the car).

The installer (who had been back to fix the safe speed option - see below) didn't realise after two attempts at fixing the problem, he had used the wrong ignition source. They use third party companies to do the install so I'm guessing I was unlucky.

They then sent me one of their engineers who quickly fixed the problem. They also called me virtually everyday for almost 2 weeks (thats how often it went off) to verify it was a false alarm.

The other plus point is the safe speed option (extra 70.00 a year). This is like the road angel system (mayb its the same thing) which alerts you to fixed speed cameras. But unlike Road Angel its all hidden away and automatically downloads updates via the GSM phone built into the tracker unit.

P.S. Your supposed to let them know if the car will be moved without starting it (i.e. flatbed transport). Otherwise they may charge you for the false alarm (although I'm guessing this is only if your trackers constantly going off).

Just read the website about the safe speed thing.

Can you turn it off or override it?
For instance, does it just beep constantly if you decide to do 85 on the motorway?

    cheers

No. It only beeps when your coming up to a Gatso (fixed speed camera). It beeps a few times when your approaching. And once again when your very close. Basically its a speed camera warning system.

The Police are obliged to list speed camera locations (because of the whole accident blackspot argument......... and hence there is no reason to hide them or not list locations). The database of locations is downloaded to ur trackstar and it lets u know when ur approaching one of the locations listed.

I've heard people complain the Road angel (another stick on system u can buy which does the same thing) isn't always up to date. But I haven't been past a camera (in ~2000 miles) this thing hasn't known about and warned me. Odd since I thought it was actually the Road angel system incorporated into the Trackstar (so maybe I'm just lucky, fingers crossed I stay that way).

The plus points over the Road Angel are:

    1) Its hidden away. The road angel basically sticks on your screen somewhere.
    2) It downloads the updates via the trackers GSM phone automatically. The road angel you have to take inside and plug into your computer.
    3) If your going to fit the tracker unit anyway it works out cheaper. Since you only pay 70 a year subscription. Whereas the Road Angel costs ~400 with 2 years subscription.

    The bad points are:

    1) If you have more then 1 car you can't take it from car to car. You can with the Road Angel since its portable.
    2) It won't detect mobile traps. i.e. Plod on a bridge with a laser detector gun.
    3) You have to make sure you don't become too complacent with it. Because of point (2) above.

To be clear it won't beep if your doing 85 on the motorway unless your coming upto a speed camera. In short considering the cost I think its a good plus point for the Trackstar.

    thanks for that 5to1.

I payed for the trackstar on thursday to be fitted to the new motor on this coming tuesday.
I've phoned them back and asked for the safe speed (extra 70 quid odd) to be added.I'd have been relying solely on my eyes otherwise.

    cheers

FYI...not sure if you know but...if you pay for the annual subscription\life subscribtion of the tracking device by direct debit, they give you a free 3 month trial of the warning system so you can test it out.

I'm getting the tracker fitted on Thursday and will see what it is like but imagine I will pay the £70 anyway. I guess 3 points on the license will cost more than £70 in insurance premiums anyaway !

    No problem.

But like I said, be carefull guys. Its better then driving "blind" but its not full proof.

For me it eliminates the worry of being caught 10-15 mph over when in an unfamiliar area (you know what I mean, the constant camera spotting).
