I live in the South, so people here pronounce car names a lot differently than I do. For instance, I call a Porsche a Por-SHUH (which is the correct pronunciation anyways) and a 360 Modena a Mod-EE-NUH. Everyone around here tries to correct me on the Por-SHUH thing and say "What er you? Proper British or somethin'?" (My impression of a redneck voice). So how do you pronounce Porsche and Modena or whatever else you can come up with?

    I have a Porsche and I say por-sh, not the proper por-shuh.

    IIRC Modena is pronounced Mode-nuh.

Yeah, I guess if it's the way you've been saying it all your life then it sticks in your mind. I know the correct pronunciation of Modena, but I've just always called it Mod-EE-nuh for some reason.

I use the correct pronunciation of Porsche. My father-in-law lived in Germany for a couple years and he's owned a bunch.

No offense, but I cringe every time someone from the UK or US tries to say "Porsche". Even if they don't say "Porsh" (*shiver*), there are usually two things wrong:

    1) The "e" in "Porsche" is not an "a". You don't say "Por-shaaaaaaaaaaaaaah". It's an "e" like the second e in "eloquent" (... if "eloquent" is pronounced like I think it's supposed to be ). Alternatively, try to say "Por-shay" without the "y" ;)

    2) The accentuation. It's POR-sche, not por-SCHE.

(Hope you're sitting in front of your computer now trying to correctly pronounce "Porsche" :p)

Florian, settle a bet (disagreement) for me. I have a friend (American) who speaks German and lived in Frankfurt for a few years. He said that Porsch vs. Porsch-a vs. whatnot is really a regional dialect issue, not a German language "rule". Is that true? Sounds plausible but I've never heard it anywhere else.

No. The correct pronounciation is the one explained above, and even in the huge differences between the German dialects, it nearly stays the same. Porsh or Por-SHAH is simply ... wrong ;)

Modena is pronounced moe-deh-nah. That one is a lot like how it would be pronounced in Spanish, but Italian words with gi ge ghi ghe ci ce chi or che always throw me for a loop, because they are completely against what we are taught.

Murcielago, for example, is pronounced moor-chi-el-ah-go. While Ciao is pronounced chow. Those Italians had it all backwards.

It is a spanish word meaning bat.
    Moor - as in poor
thee - with an exaggerated th
    e - gets the accent
    lago

Not a native spanish speaker though and a bit hard to transliterate.

reminds me of a blonde joke.

    long introduction bla bla bla.
"...well, you could paint the porch."
she comes back inside after half an hour "ready!"
    "that was quick!"
    "wasn't that much work...oh by the way it's not a porsh, it's a ferrari"

...it is funnier when you haven't just been talking about porsches....

Why would you pronounce the translated word? I'm not too sure about the details of the Swedish pronounciation, but you won't go wrong with saying "Konigsegg".

In swedish king'segg would be Kungsägg.
Koenigsegg is a combination of the german König or Koenig with the english "egg".
But I doubt it was intended like that, no idea how to pronounce it.

I doubt that there was any intention at all, as it's the last name of the company's founder :)

    I like this game!
If you just allow me to brag. I speak Dutch, English, German, Swedish and Spanish fluently, my strong point being pronunciation. Use all of them practically every day although I am not a linguist.
Also sort of know how to pronounce French, Italian and Bulgarian.
    End of brag.
