Does anyone know if it is possible to put a 360 engine in a 308? I was enjoying the V12 308 thread and was thinking that you would get great HP from a stock 360 motor. Thanks Dean
Not a bad idea. In theory it wouldn't be very difficult I don't think, costly though. I think a good 360 engine is about $20k then you need an ECU, headers made, ect - you'll be $25k-$30k by the time it runs I'd guess....if you're doing all the work yourself. a 355 engine, trans and subframe has been done, do a search. It looked like a lot of work and the axles end up canted 2" to get the wheels in the right place, custom offset wheel to keep them under the fenders and a few other things.
I think you can, if someone was able to put a V12 on a 308, then I don't see why a 360 motor wouldn't fit?
the block of the 308 and 360 are nearly identically however the catch is the intake plenum on the 360 sits about foot off the engine, so it wouldn't fit unless you made a completely new intake left the bonnet off.
The block on a 348 is like a 308 then the 355 changed the shape along the pan rail making it very difficult to mate them to the 308 box. Does someone have a pic of a 360 block during an engine out service to see the pan rail area?
walla, just took these for you. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey, shouldn't that be in a car by now??? It does look like an adapter would be required on the sump flange, probably welded to the tranaxle. I guess that's what the 12 conversion requires too.
I think it will fit. Remember the 308 motor is sitting on top of the tranny and the 360 motor is in front of the tranny. What's the overall height of the 360 motor?
to do that you would need the 360 tranny, and to do that you really need to stretch the car. A 355 eng/trans with installed, but the axles don't run straight, thye cant 2" I think I read.
Exactly, probably 4" like the 288 GTO. I would opt to move the rear suspension/shock attachment points rather than stretch the chassis.
Recall the Trans Am's, Fire Chickens and the odd hot rod with the hood cut out for the air cleaner... it can be done =). Back to the origianl ?..... Interesting notion. Not really a project on which you'd make $. Just sonething you'd do for fun, damn the cost. As an additional note it's interesting how this; techincally a bastard child, recieves positive thougths simply because it's a Ferrari engine swap while a 308 with some "off brand" motor is beat like a red-headed step child. As to wether it would fit...no idea! People have done SBChevy w/Porsche transaxles in stock wheelbase 308's...so overall it seems possible. As to wether it's a fun project given you have deep pockets, don't care what people think and have no delusions on wether you can get your $ back...cool! As to if I'd like to see/hear/drive the finished product...hell yeah! Good luck and if it's you passion, go for it.
Interestingly Pf had Ferrari stretch the 308GT4 wheelbase by 4 inches for the Mondial so that it is almost the same as the 360/430. I plan to use a 360/430 engine in the 3-seater version of my Monzer with the engine mounted longitudinally. Although it is longer than the transverse setup it will fit, or rather I will make it fit by adjusting the cabin rear bulkhead. As I will have loads of space either side of the engine with the fore/aft installation, I will make use of this dead space in other ways.
Scott, As the 360 engine sits lower in the chassis because the transmission is aft rather than under the engine this should offset the plenum height slightly. Out of interest, what is the overall height of the 360 from the top of the plenum to the bottom of the sump and the equivalent for the 308qv? My new rear deck has a bulge that I put there with the 360 plenum in mind. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
No clue on the dimensions...just trying to be funny given the p-chops of F-40's/550's/308's with blowers sticking out the front hood/bonnet etc. Overall though, the 360 chassis is engineered for the fore/aft configuration and lower CG. The 308 chassis is obviously not be the same (25+years older) and other than lowering the engine mount location getting a 360 engine to fit "under" the OEM decklid may be tricky. Not impossible.... nor worth trying, but tricky
I don't have a 360 engine drawing. These are of the Mondial Qv. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I meant the other Scott (McGehee). I agree that it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to fit a 360 into a 308 without modifying the body one way or another, however, I WILL put a 360/430 into one of my Monzers and that will be relatively easy.
Clive, the overall hight from bottom of pan to top is 28" from the skirt casting on the block to top of plenum is 25" and the plenum itself from mount on heads to top is 13". hope that helps. if you measure 13" from the mounting surface on the heads for the plenum runners on the 328 and measure up 13" that would be a very close approximation on how tall the 360 motor would end up.
Mounting the 360/430 enging in the chassis in the correct position only increases the overall height by very little compared to the stock Qv installation, at least when you look at the overlapped drawings below (430/Mondial). Image Unavailable, Please Login
in that overlap what you're not seeing is that the skirt on the 360 sits lower than the pan on the 328, now if you're dropping in the 360/430 engine and gearbox then it'll work. but I would say trying to get the 360 engine mated to the 328 gearbox and keep it under the bonnet wont work, and fabricating a new plenum that is shorter won't do either as oil cooler and heater hoses take up alot more room than on the 328, the plenum sits high becouse of what's under it. but given a ton of cash and time anything is possible but I don't see the advantage. now dropping in a 575 v12 mmmmmmmm... but pony up the motor alone is nearly the value of the 3x8's
Anything on top of the engine can be moved and a new flange welded to the 308 trans to get that in the right spot....still a lot of work, but I'm sure it could be done. That's why a 365/400/412 is the way to go, and with TR heads will make all the power a 575 will
Would it be possible to mount the entire 360 running gear in the 3X8? I guess the engine would probably be too far forward of the drive axles. Gene
Yes, and easier in the Monzer. I have an overlap of the 308 with the 430 that illustrates that perfectly.
