Just wondering if anyone has done it. The cover has some stains on it. Would sure like to see the cover as clean as the car under it. The material is satin-like. Dont know if OEM, but would tend to think so.

I put mine in the washing machine. Selected a low temperature (silk / wool) but with extra cycles. Came up a treat!

NEVER put a car cover in a conventional home type washing machine with an agitator! The agitator will possibly tear it. Go to a commercial laundromat and use their large front loaders (w/o agitator). Do NOT use conventional laundry soap, use about one cup of Fantastic All Purpose Cleaner. Then run it through 2 rinse cycles (to be sure ALL soap is out), and then line dry or drape it over your living room sofa to dry. DO NOT put it in the dryer, except w/o heat on air only. Trust me!!!!

Well, my original car cover still had the manufacturer's (Andrea) instructions on a card in the bag and that says machine washable at 30°C. I did it at home and it came up beautifully. The satin shines like new. I have no idea what a 'conventional' agitator is, but my Mum used to have a machine with a sort of oscillating turntable about 40 years ago - maybe an American thing that neither I nor "Andrea" know about! :D

The agitator is the thingy mc bobber that lies in the center of our American washers that has a spiral design to it and it goes back and forth at maybe a 270 degree spin each way. It's great for cleaning our dirty blood soiled clothes here in the US, but hard on (did I just say hard on!?) car covers or anything else that is so big that it pulls it in one direction whenst the item is alredy stretched all the way inst the other direction. :)

That makes sense. Can you clarify why you wouldn't use regular detergant soap (not strong enough?), and why you wouldn't put it in a dryer (shrinkage?)

Shrinkage and burnage. I had a Cal Car Cover that I got w/ my TR that I put in the washer then dryer that had several melted areas when I took it out. It melted into areas of hard plastic like blobs of hardened goo. I had to throw it in the trash. I have since educated myself. :) Oh, and use only the gentle or permanent press cycle and cold or warm water only, NOT HOT!! I don't know why no laundry soap, to tell you the truth but it says explicitely in the washing directions for my new Cover Craft cover not to use it.

Powder soaps can be abrasive and leave residue on the material and if not totally disolved could potentially cause scratching on the car when you cover it. Often times powder soap will "gum up" in blobs. Same is true when washing the cotton car cleaning rags that we use with the quick detailer/wax or whatever. If you use fabric softener you are adding "chemicals" to the material and run a possible risk of interferring with the finish (streaking, etc.). It sounds like you may have car covers that are similar material to the body sllinkies that I put on my horses after I bathe them at shows - a stretch type of shiny material. I wash them with Woolite on the delicate cycle, cold water wash/rinse.

Another good reason to use a front loader at the laundramat besides the fact that the machine is normally larger, is that it saves wear and tear on your machine. Granted most of us have the heavy duty machinery in our laundry rooms, but I'd rather put something big in someone else's equipment. Don't use commercial dryers! Even on low heat they can burn stuff and definitely shrink things - besides most laundramat dryers stink.

    Happy washing!

I'd be worried about using dry cleaners because of the chemicals that dry cleaning uses. Never know what any residue may do to your paintwork.

If that's the case, I can only imagine what those chemicals from my dry-cleaned shirts are doing to my skin.

I never thought to learn how to do laundry properly at F-chat!!

One thing to remember: Cheap dry cleaning is actually harsh to your fabrics than regular laundry using front loading machine. Chemical they use are not changed frequently, and it does damage fabric.

Wow...I just noticed how filthy my f-car cover is, and even put an item in my to-do list to that effect: "clean filthy car cover". Amazing that this thread popped up just now...:)

I'll try the front-loader with woolite....

Exactly - I would never have a shirt dry cleaned and would never buy one that couldn't be washed with good old water. Dry cleaned things never seem that fresh really.

However, your shirt is only on your back for say a 10-12 working day, whereas the car cover will be in contact with your paintwork for days or even weeks at a time - also, your body will presumably get washed off a lot more often than your car :)

Think I'll give mine a go this weekend, not that i ever use it, car's never in the garage long enough!
