    Hi all,

I had a project in mind. Is it possible to just buy the engine and all necessary components from Brabus, AMG, or Mercedes-Benz?

    Yes, no, maybe so?

    Cheers!

    Hmm, interesting. Thanks, guys.

Anyone else know? If so, I imagine they would be in the tens of thousands?

I'm looking for the engine in the SL65 AMG. :)

Sure you can buy an SL65 engine... contact a MB dealer and they should be able to provide a part number.

The engine is probably in the tens of thousands of $$$. Your main concern would be whether it comes with all accessories (like the starter, wiring harness, alternator, ECU, fuel injection system, etc).

The famous rally driver from Dubai, Mohammad bin Sulayem, was able to acquire an SLR engine which he had fitted to his SLK 55 by his personal mechanic. I'm sure that takes connections, but is not entirely impossible.

Of course you can, direct from your MB dealer.......how much do you want to spend ? That is all that matters.....and because of that factor, I'd scour the country for a used engine first.

Maybe look for a salvage car as well? This motor has to cost close to $100k complete from MB, so it could be a way to save some money.

    Yes it's possible. I would start by calling 800.367.6372, MBUSAs toll-free #.

I totally agree. Unless you have deep pockets, you won't be buying the engine from a dealer. I would guess the price between 50-80K. But I am very curious how much it would be.

If you call the dealer and ask, post the price please.

Well......I just got off the phone with my contact at the dealer....they have to e-mail MB for a price as it is not in the computer.....I asked for the cost of an SL65 crate motor with ECU and wiring harness.

    Let's see what they say..........

Yep, buy a totaled/salvaged Merc and you should be a-ok and you know you'll have all the accessories. Plus you can then part out the rest of the car.

Where did you get that information?

KDS, did you get a response?

I was thinking in the neighborhood of $25,000, but darn.

I remember hearing that a Diablo engine was $85,000. How can an engine in a Merc be more than half the cost of the car? I suppose it's retail, that's why. Bleh.

This does put a hamper on my plans! Are SL65s regularly salvaged? Haha!

    Thanks, guys!

The 65 is a $57k option over the 55. Are there any differences other than engine on these cars? To me, this implies the motor would cost $57k above and beyond whatever a 55 motor costs. I know it's a crude formula, but helps to get a ballpark.
