My neighbors BBQ caught on fire this evening. He knocked on my door and asked if I had a fire extinguisher. I grabbed the one from the Ferrari and we put out the fire. It got hot enough to melt a portion of his lid. Too much grease build up.

I only sprayed the fire for about 5 seconds and put the pin back in when I was done.

Can a fire extinguisher be used more than once or is it toast?

Be careful - it depends on the extinguisher. Not ALL are rated to be refilled, even if
they physically CAN be refilled. Check before you buy to be sure.

Dry chemical extinguishers need to be serviced every use. If it is of the disposable type toss it and get a new one. Should not rely on it again.

Yes they can be used more than once, I used mine recently to put out the same sort of BBq fire, then not long after I used it to help undo a tight wheel nut so yes you can use it more than once.

The fire extinguisher company that i have used will not refill an extinguisher with a plastic head - has to be metal.

If you do not find it in the yellow pages, check with retail welding supply firms. Often, they will do it while you wait, or exchange the unit.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will get a new one for the car and have the used one serviced, if possible, to have a spare on hand in case the neighbor tries to grill brontasauras burgers again.

Look for a Fire Safety Equipment company, and take it in.

If able, they will refill and re-tag it.

Most all fire extinguishers are rechargeable, with the exception of the super cheap ones with the plastic valve, as previously mentioned. Any reputable dealer can advise on whether yours is worth refilling or not.

I keep Halon units in the cars, and around the house I get dry chemical ones from Costco..they are only $20 to $30 each, and keep them in the garage, and upstairs and downstairs in the house. Like any piece of safety equipment, it seems unnecessary the majority of the time, but when you need it, you NEED IT NOW! ;)

Just to add, that when you do "NEED IT NOW", you need to be confident that the extinguisher is not going to expire after just a couple of seconds use due to having been previously used. It's just not worth the gamble!

Like my pistol, they are checked and kept constantly loaded. Just as I would never hang an empty fire extinguisher on the wall, I would never carry an empty pistol. What would be the point? ;)

And more to the point, you SHOULD check your extinguishers periodically. I found one that had lost part of a charge and immediately took it in for repair and recharging, although it probably would have been cheaper to just buy another new one from Costco, their prices rock.

:) Always better to be safe than sorry!.

Some people don't realise the risks involved with using an extinguisher more than once.

Had it at work once, when I needed to use an extinguisher only to discover someone had used it and then put it back partially discharged!. for all the good the remaining two second burst did, I might as well have just tried spitting to put the flames out!. I was grateful it wasn't a work colleague on fire that needed putting out. I found another extinguisher that was full and dealt with the flames but valuable time could have been lost.

As other have stated, get yourself a REAL fire extinguisher your your car - one with Halon. A dry chemical-type may put out the fire, but it will cause a plethora of other related problems in the engine compartment. One of the best, albeit expensive, Halon fire extinguishers is sold by Competition Components. Super high quality - both extinguisher and mount. The mount is CNC billet aluminum with a single "Pull" knob to release the extinguisher. It makes the OEM Ferrari model look like junk.

Halon is not available outside the US - it has been banned. It is therefore unlikely that Ferrari make one :(

New production is banned in the USA too, but there is plenty of "reclaimed" Halon available through fire protection shops for sale in new fire extinguishers and to refill used ones. This may be a viable option in other countries too. And I am sure in countries like India and China they are still producing it, legal or not. ;)

I am sure whatever Ferrari offers will be Halatron or dry chemical alternative.

We are probably the exception. I friend visited and saw the extinguishers in the garage and one in the kitchen and commented "are you afraid of a fire or something?" I said "not anymore". ;)
