When the cars were new were either of these stickers on the campagnolo wheels? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the black one on my original hardly used spare wheel. Where can I get the stickers? Only from Parker Hall? Regards Matthias Image Unavailable, Please Login
So once again with a Dino, no definitive answer. You can get both kind at maseratinet.com and hallpantera.com.
Strange, Matthias. I have never seen that on a Dino wheel. It would have been quite noticeable in photos. The first picture below was taken in 2005 in NY before I bought the car. You can just see the foil sticker. The 2nd picture we took when the car arrived in 2006; the third taken weeks later, showing a peeling foil sticker. We hadn't worked on the car at that point. Judging from their condition and appearance, the wheels have never been re-painted, and the stickers original. I tried to glue the old stickers back on, but the print had worn through in some, so I decided later to replace them. I believe Superformance has the foil stickers. We didn't repaint the wheels. We just cleaned them and touched up the nicked and scratched areas. You might have opened a new Pandora's box, omgjon, ranking right there with "are my headlamp covers original?". Matthias, I would say with almost complete certainty that the Campagnolo sticker was added after the fact. These aftermarket stickers are common in the 308 community where Campagnolo badging was OEM on some of the wheels delivered with these cars. My 1977 308 GTB has the original wheels and the word Campagnolo along with all other black markings on the wheels are NOT stickers but rather thin ink transfers that have no clear border to locate the letters. You will note than in your photo the sticker has a border indicating the reproduction decals that are out there, most likely added after the fact. I have never seen original Campagnolo lettering where the border is present as in your photo. Some people apply these decals and then clear over them but the border is always present to the overly observant eye. My conclusion is that black Campagnolo lettering NEVER came on a Dino. The gold foil decals are another story and I do believe them to be OEM on the Chairs and Flares wheels.
Hello Rob, very interesting. I have hardly any expierence regarding these Campagnolo stickers. The sticker is only on the spare wheel, not on the other 4 rims at the car. Mine is #06548 LHD-modell with Campagnolo rims and flares, production date 24th of Mai 1973, delivered directly from the factory to an Italian professor and had one more owner before I bought the car. The spare wheel looks like new. Never used. Regards Matthias
All my Campy wheels have OEM silk screened (I'm assuming) painted lettering..an FCA judge even complimented them.... No clear vinyl or any of that jazz........ To duplicate properly I'd have a graphics shop do vinyl lettering off a backing strip. No clear film that way either......you'd have to scrape the lettering off to know....
Actually if you really want to do it perfectly you can have a decal shop cut you the outline and you can use it as a stencil to airbrush the letters. Once the stencil is removed the letters would be 100% identical to OEM. Come to think of it I have a decal cutting machine. Too many projects and to little time
It wasn't a stencil, to do the closed letters "o" and such a silk screen would work. No idea if that's how they did it originally...
With a decal machine you can cut stencils of all kinds of letters so an 'o' is not a problem. The 'masking' is applied as a negative on the surface and is a decal so it will not move. Once painted over, you peel away the decal to reveal the painted letters. Originally I suspect they used an ink transfer that deposited letters made of an ink/paint blend. My method results in a perfect copy even if the procedure is different.
Mathias - Try here http://www.dinoparts.de/EN/ferrari-206-gt/body-fittings/badges/ Why would "Campagnolo" put a sticker on a wheel which has "campagnolo" stamped into the wheel? No early photos i have ever seen of dinos has ever showed these stickers on the wheels.
My 74 Pantera has Campagnolo wheels and with the 10" rear wheels (Euro) it had the black 'campagnolo' but the rear 8"s had the silver foil scipted 'campagnolo'. It is virtually impossible to find the silver foil ones, but I did order these from this company and they have both the styles shown above, identical to what was shown. They look excellent, have not yet installed. http://precisionproformance.com/wheelsaccess.php I believe the price is more favorable as well. Best wishes.
I had a look at the paint work of the ones I bought some years back and my guess is that they have not been restored/repainted. I don't have any history with them. A reasonable assumption is that the stickers are original - they look sloppily put on. The only sticker is the gold one. Kevin Image Unavailable, Please Login
OK, Andy, the lovely lady wielding the brush...who is she? She looks to be having way too much fun touching up the backside of that Campy. Did you 'photoshop' the picture? Is she actually painting a delicate flower on canvas? Did you magically replace the canvas with magnesium & rubber? Inquiring minds want to know! Coop
Hahaha, that's my wife, Coop. She was actually retouching the wheels when we removed them the 1st time. The inside sections of the wheels were covered with a thick grease, which looked terrible but protected the rims.
Does anyone have any experience with the replica Campagnolo wheels at Superformance or Rutlands? Do they have "Dino" and "Campagnolo" cast in to the front side? Photos? Thanks, Freeman
I was looking at the images I have of the 6,000 mile *04234*. It has the gold Campagnolo sticker. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's some more. Freeman Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Freeman, From the picture at the Superformance website, it appears that they have neither cast in. http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-246/wheels.htm Having said that, I have seen other repros (T. Rutlands) with just the boss carrying the "Campagnolo" script, but with no boss/"Dino" opposing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Reproduction-Campagnolo-Wheel-Set-Ferrari-Dino-246-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2c57e1ffc0QQitemZ190452989888QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories As I understand it, the casting quality and finish are much better on the repros (possibly powder coated)...too perfect, some would say...compared to the rough & painted casting of the originals. However, being constructed in fresh aluminum with modern casting techniques, they are arguably a much safer wheel for day-to-day or track use. Of course, they would likely receive a demerit at a formal show, but.... If my memory serves, someone has a set of these on a Dino & shared the experience with us. Hopefully, he'll chime in soon. The first pic is from Superformance, the second two are from T. Rutlands. Whaddya think? Coop Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Coop, Thanks for the images and comparison. Maybe Campagnolo makes them for Rutlands? On the Superformance site with their images you can see they had Campagnolo cast in. The images are quite small though. Old magnesium is dangerous to drive on. Freeman
I have only seen the gold stickers. Never seen the black ones on a Dino. What else had the campy wheels?? D
