    Hi Guys

Anyone have any insight into the law around kids in the front seat in CA.

Bottom line - can I legally take my 8 year old for a ride in the 16M? Booster needed?

    Thanks in advance.

Short answer yes, I do it all the time - even my 4 y/o daughter. I think key things are, make sure airbag disengages, and proper age appropriate booster seat.
CA law says child can sit in front if it is a 2 seater.

    Perfect thanks for the replies!

At that rate the 5 year old will get a ride also!

Is turning the airbag off easy? I’m in Singapore and the car / manual is in SoCal so not like I can go run to the garage and check it out ! ;-)

you turn off airbag if it is infant in a rear facing child seat or in a front facing child seat.
you do not turn off airbag once the kids are 12 yrs old.
it is a grey area for booster seat, whether you should turn off airbag. I do not.

My understanding of the CA law is that if its a 2 seat car, the front seat is ok. Follow the airbag recommendations as suggested.

latest Consumer's Reports car podcast (Talking Cars #206) talks about this exact issue.

    short version:
    1. turn off airbag if it is a rear facing child seat in front seat.
    2. do NOT turn off airbag if it is front facing child seat (whether harness or booster seat), move the seat to its more rearward position.
