I bought a 2007 F-car from CA, both the autocheck and carfax were prefect.
I went to the FL DMV today and they said the will have to record the mileage as "Exempt" being as "its over 10yrs old and California didn't record the mileage on the title."
To be honest, Im freaking out a bit, not sure how this will be noted on the new carfax, obviously is it triggers a "red !" there can be a huge financial impact.
FL said I should try to contact the CA DMV and ask them to print a duplicate title with the mileage on it this time.... but they might as well asked me to solve world hunger. I would image that would involve shipping the car back to CA and having the owner take it to the DMV.

I walked away, went home and started some research, I went through a ton of carfaxs on Bat can autrotrader etc. and I noticed quite a few cars with CA ownership lack the mileage on titling and registration entries. I did find a few "Exempt from mileage reading" with no red warning like this example(not mine). They typically have the mileage reported on the inspection and the dealer visits... as does mine.

Anyone else have experience with this? will "Exempt" damn my car or is this a normal thing?

No, your car will be fine.....I bought a Ford GT a couple of years ago and because it had an odometer display replacement a few years before I chose to list it as mileage exempt on the title.

Most states over 10 years old are listed as exempt. CARFAX pulls data on service, etc. But records and receipts are what really matter. I make copies of all titles before taking to DMV. Records are key and titles are a goofy way to deal with cars. Every state is different. So much hassle. F’ing BS. Should be a modern solution for this and they should keep good electronic records. Most if the errors are human anyway. People can’t see, are careless and create issues where it should not matter. Good documented records are all that matter!

I would just go to an authorized shop for a VIN verification and mileage check (I assume would be included) and ask that they contact CARFAX to add a time stamped event (say you do this Monday) with verified mileage and VIN.
(If this is possible, idk FL law).

Your local Police Dept. or Highway Patrol should be able to do a VIN verification and mileage check.

I wouldn't worry about what shows on a Carfax. These days it's universally known that Carfax reports contain a lot of inaccurate data, and as long as you know the story and have documentation to back it up, I think that would satisfy most buyers.

    Thank guys

I ended up calling California DMV, waiting on hold for no joke 2hr 4min haha, Asked them about it. They said even I sent the car back to the original owner to take it to the DMV they cannot note the mileage on a 10+ year old car, standard OPs. I checked a couple dozen other car carfax i randomly found on the net, and sure enough, if they were re-title at any point after the car was 10yrs old, the CA leaves the blank.
And like i mentioned before, carfax says that this will not show up as a negative on the carfax. There are a few dealer entries within the last month noting the mileage on the current carfax so everything should be Ok.
