I've been chasing an intermittent problem. My car's starter will not consistently engage when the key is turned. I've cleaned all the connections and the grounds. I even changed the starter. I am now focused on the ignition switch. I would like to bypass it. I know that the white wire is going to the starter. I can't tell from the wiring diagram what wire I need to connect to the white wire to engage the starter. Does anyone know how to hot wire a 1986 328?

I have a 308 so things might not be the same but when I was trouble shooting this past winter I remember that the wires had different gauges so on a blind guess the heavier wires would handle the starter motor current. Hope that clue helps.

    Dean,

There should be 2 wires to the started solenoid. As Tim said, the heavy one is the power to the starter. That wire is connected directly to the battery. The lighter weight wire supplies current to the solenoid when the ignition switch is turned. It engages the starter gear and closes the circuit supplying current to the starter motor.

To jump it, disconnect the lighter wire and tape over the end so as to insulate it. Then you can rig a remote starter by running a wire from the battery through a starter button an then to the solenoid. Press the button and it will activate the starter to crank the engine. To start engine the ignition switch must be in the run position.

Make sure you disconnect the battery before messing with this.

Thank you for the responses. I think the easy way to do this is to make the connection when the key is in position III, the start position. I need to know what wires are connected in position III, then remove the wires and make a direct connection. I know the wire to the starter is the white one. Which wire closes the start circuit?

The white wire is going from the ig switch to starter. Connecting the white wire to any 12V source will by pass the switch. For the 308 the red wire connected to the ig switch is 12V, directly from the battery. So at the ig switch, jumping red to white should engage the starter if it's the same as the 308. Red should also be a heavier gage wire than white.

If you disconnect red form the ig switch you will also cut power to all other switch controlled functions.

Assumi g this is the same set up as the 87 mondial, there is a kit to sort this out. Consists of a relay you mount near the starter motor and feed this 12 volts from a good source. Use the original 12 volt signal wire to trigger the relay and use its out put to activate the starter motor solenoid.

I was going to suggest this as well - hot starting problems are more common in the Mondial, and the known good solution is to install a Bosch relay kit that runs around $25. Instead of bypassing the ignition switch, it's retained and connected to the relay, which sends the high current direct to the starter, you don't want it running through a starter button!

Here you go - a quick search in the Mondial section for keywords "starter relay kit" found this thread with photos, instructions, and successful results: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/mondial/483899-starter-relay-kit-arrived.html?highlight=mondial+starter+relay+kit

The kit is the Bosch WR1 part number - here it is on Amazon for $25: https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-WR1-Starter-Relay/dp/B001COAX78/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1494704693&sr=8-2&keywords=bosch+wr1+relay+kit

I had actually considered doing this. I didn't know there was a kit, thanks for the link. I may buy one to have on hand. I've concluded that I want to locate the problem and fit it. I think the switch is faulty. The factory system works. I would prefer to fix what's wrong instead of doing a work around solution. If I can't sort it out a may revert to the relay.

I put in a new ignition switch. So far it has started every time, even when hot. Maybe it's fixed.
