Thought I would create a thread and spreadsheet to show the true cost of creating a Challenge Stradale from stock Modena F1 car.

I have a couple of YouTubers coming to shoot videos of my cars in the next month and thought it would be interesting to work out roughly what it would cost nowadays to do this project.

Years ago (8+ now) 360Trev inspired me and helped me to do exactly that. At the time I was very specific with what spec I wanted being a black car, yellow callipers, red/black alcantara, roll bar, harnesses etc etc. Back then the used Stradale was not actually that much more than the Modena (around £20-£30k GBP extra). Being such limited number and even more so as I wanted a RHD car (116 UK cars imported) I couldn't find the car I was looking for so decided to build one and set about on a nut and bolt conversion using original parts. Long story short 8 years later I still love the car I created, it has been a daily driver and gets used and abused bringing massive smiles to my face every day. Obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing and had I have known the prices that Challenge Stradales would sky rocket to, I would have simply waited and bought one, but then I probably would not have used it as much and got the enjoyment I have done from my car.

People don't realise the amount of changes between the standard Modena and the differences Ferrari made in order to create the Stradale, from the outside they think its just a different set of bumpers, side skirts a lip engine lid and some wheels ... with the occasional tri-colour stripe. In reality the list of differences is vast. Items such are the entire dash are completely different (more narrow on the Stradale to allow for the doors to close with the CF door cards), even down to the pattern change from triangle to round holes in the 3 rear bumper grills.

As of today Aug 2018 I just calculated that to buy the full conversion parts new from Eurospares/Maranello the cost would be:
    £143,214 ($185,653) inc VAT

There are a vast number of parts unavailable now and Ferrari would not sell most of the kit unless you could prove you own a Stradale and prove the VIN. Items like Carbon seats (specific to stradale) are crazy prices if you can get them. The last set I saw on ebay were £8000 used. A Stradale Steering wheel was listed on ebay for €7900 euros !!. Ive compiled the prices using the last known ones on the two sites along with some ebay prices of used items where I couldn't get new price, but generally if you tried to order the parts the price would go up..
There are also a number of items I cannot get prices for such as trim pieces in alcantara but you get a good general idea of the true cost.

That’s a comprehensive list of items! Not including work hours, I think it’s safe to say that one would be better off buying the real deal.

But then again; There is a certain feel to having acomplished a task such as this.

    Well Done!

Thanks Mickster, it was a while back when I built this but much fun to do it and working out how to rewire the car was a challenge.
I'm lurking over on the TR thread these days building the 'Ratarossa' Testarossa Spider project.... proving to be even more fun than the Stradale build.

The CS engines were also balanced and blueprinted IIRC, so one has to pay for that too...

So, how much do you estimate to build a replica CS if one could get parts?

    - Parts $185k++
    - Labor (incl blueprint the engine)
    - Donor 360

Gotta be approaching $400k? (with fairly valued labor)

Yes without a doubt not worth it these days, just buy a Stradale. Even if you want a manual Stradale, cheaper to buy a CS and work back fitting the manual box.

Obviously when I did the project 8 years ago CS prices were still low and there were a few crashed cars that were simply broken for parts, which is pretty much where I acquired 70% of the kit, it was still expensive but nothing like what you would spend nowadays since the Stradale has become somewhat of a cult Ferrari and prices of both cars and parts have gone sky high.

Wow you learn something new each day, I never knew the screen difference. I always thought it was the Challenge track cars that got the lightweight front screen.

You are absolutely right though, the part numbers are unique to Stradale

Weight saving, when mine needs replacing I’ll fit the Strad one

I saw your thread yesterday Randy, you did a cracking job on the car mate.

Yes really if you can get a load of parts, especially interior from a breaker then you are laughing as that kit if pretty much unobtainable new now and its the only way to do this.
