Here's something I've been thinking about. The long awaited Bugatti Veyron is now here, and with roughly 1000 horsepower it is certainly the most powerful production supercar yet. Before the Veyron, supercar heavyweights from Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren lingered in the 600hp area. Will the 1000 horses of the new Bugatti raise the bar for all other manufacturers, or will the appropriately named "horsepower war" continue status quo? My feeling is that the power alone of the Veyron is not going to be enough to cause other marques to produce similarly outrageous engines. Engineering such engines is not an obstacle for companies. We have all seen simple American V8s that push over 1000 horsepower, and everyone's heard one of those "my friend know's a guy who's cousin's best friend's...(etc.)...has a civic that does 7 second quarters." So we all know that if Ferrari feels it is necessary, they are more than capable of building an engine with 1000 horsepower that can, on paper, rival the Veyron. So will they? What are your thoughts?

I know Saleen is working on 1000hp upgrade for the S7. The current twin-turbo 750hp S7 is only running 5.5psi of boost.

I don't think Ferrari, Lambo or any of the big boys will jump at it, but i think some of the smaller exotic makers like Saleen will.

The Ferrari FXX motor is said to be going in the 2008/2009 F60.. so roughly 800-850hp.

Lamborghini is working on a rumored 1000hp vehicle, and the Murcielago replacement in 2010 will have an all new V12 developed from the Gallardo's V10.. the V12 might displace a max of 7.2 liters, and could hit atleast 720hp (keeping with the Gallardo motor's output of 100hp/liter).

    The problem isn't a 1000hp
Its 1000hp that meets E.P.A. levels, smog and such.

I don't thing the other manufactorers will respond right away. Ferrari & Porsche in particular are focused on making the total package, and as impressive as the Veryon is, at 4000lbs+ it is no sports car. Just a supremely fast GT. Nevertheless the bar has been set and I think it will gradually get chipped away as time goes on, as was the case with the McLaren F1. Afterall, it took VW something like 8 years to figure out how to make this thing work, so you simply can't turn around and make such a car overnight.

It is also important to note that the Veryon is a halo car for Bugatti, they will not turn a profit dispite the $1.25Musd price tag. It was intended to reintroduce the mark with a big statement, and pave the way for series production cars that will challenge 430/Gallardo/Porsche Turbo.

I guess for road car you are right - 1979 saw the world's first 200mph road car in the form of the Koenig Ferrari Boxer - although it was hardly a 'production car'.

And of course in 1987, Ferrari gave us the first road car genuinely capable of 200mph, the F40.

I was under the impression the F40 topped out at 198, though a search reveals a few links claiming 201.
